Jr Fred Edward Maxey

He was born in Roanoke, Va., on June 4, 1922. After living in Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana and Indiana, his family moved to Leeds in 1937, where his father was called to Mt. Hebron Baptist Church as a minister. There he met his wife, Ostella and raised three sons. He attended and graduated from Leeds High School, where he was the first student body president. He worked in Leeds until he went to work for Longview Lime, Co. in 1955. Mr. Maxey retired from Dravo Lime Co. in 1988. During his career he was active in the American Water Works Association, where he served on numerous boards and committees and was awarded the Fuller Award and was made a Life Member of AWWA.

Mr. Maxey loved his community and was active in the Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as President and was also named Citizen of the Year in 1996. He was a Charter Member of Valley View Baptist Church, Leeds, Al., where he was honored as Deacon Emeritus and loved and faithfully served his Lord and church family for 56 years.

Mr. Maxey was a World War II veteran serving with the 6th Marine Division from 1944-1946, fighting in the Battle of Okinawa. He was always a proud Marine.

Mr. Maxey was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Fred E. Maxey, Sr. and Pearl Maxey, his son, Fred E. Maxey, III and his sister Rose Ann Hightower.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ostella Brasher Maxey, sons Lynn Maxey (Sue) and David Maxey (Vicki); grandchildren Tamala M. Hillhouse (John), Alana Maxey, Stephanie Maxey, Will Maxey, Nate Maxey (Brett) and Nick Maxey; great grandchildren; Emily Hillhouse, Suzanne Hillhouse and Henley Maxey; brother Lafayette Maxey, Richmond, Va., sisters Virginia Brasher, Leeds, Al. and Eneda Baber, Taylors Valley, Va. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 23, at Valley View Baptist Church in Leeds, Al., at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Bold Springs Cemetery.
