Just heard the news....My condolences to the Whitfield family.  My first game at old Cleveland Stadium, "Wingy" hit a home run -- I said, "Rocky who?"  (My Dad's favorite player) -- and became a fan of #15, Mr. Whitfield.!! Thanks always for the happy memories down at the old ball park! Blessings.

I just heard of the news of Wingy's passing from his former teammate Gary Bell. Growing up in Ohio in the 60's, he was a favorite.  God Bless the family. He was one of a kind.

"Wingy" is one of the players who made me love baseball, and i still love it a half century later.  His unique lefty swing and his tight throwing motion was replicated on many a playgrounds.  My condolences to his family -- Wingy made a great contribution to my life!

To the family of "Wingy", please accept my deepest condolences on his passing.  I loved watching Fred play and I especially loved his unique swing. A highlight of my childhood and in watching the Cleveland Indians, was sneaking down to sit behind the dugout late in the second game of a double header, and seeing Wingy his a grand slam homer to beat the Yankees.  May he rest in God's loving arms.

Fred was a super baseball player and a very nice and  kind man.  He will surely be missed by all those who had the honor of meeting him and talking with him... and being able to see him play ball.  My prayers are with his beautiful family at this time.

As a young child I will never forget Fred Wingy Whitfield, the Yankee Clipper. I would try and immitate his unique way he held his bat when playing baseball with my friends. A special player from an era of time when we all were innocent. My Prayers to his family

Fred was an excellent player and I will long remember his career and keep his card in my collection. Great to hear he also had a personal relationship with the Lord.

I was saddened to learn recently of Mr. Whitfield's passing.  
I wasn't fortunate to have ever ment him but saw him play many times.  As a youngster I was a lefty first baseman myself so he was one of my heroes during my childhood and learned much by watching his play around the bag.
In later years I wrote him a few times and being the gentleman I'm sure he was he always answered my autograph requests very quickly and it ment a great deal to an old fan of his.
  I'm sure he's in heaven right know hitting one down in the right field corner and going for two.
  Again to his loved ones my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

I am a longtime Indians baseball fan and appreciate Fred's many contributions to the franchise in the Sixties. I also know that he was a much-liked teammate and beloved family man. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.

Fred was a Big Leaguer all the way, am sorry to hear of his passing..was a team mate of his in the Winter League in 1959. All the guys loved Fred...

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Fred.  I saw most of his games at Keokuk in 1958 where he was a very good player and I remember his accomplishments well.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your sweet husband Fred, I just heard about his passing today. I know how close you were by the way you was always talking such sweet things about him when we worked together at Dewberry Engraving-so many years ago (1971-1977 was was when I worked there) in many departments- I worked with you in Billy Joe Pickett's department and I enjoyed every minute that I worked with you because you were always talking about all the good times you & Fred had when he played professional ball. I could tell you really loved him a bunch and enjoyed being with him out there on the circuit with all those folks that made you so happy.  We will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.  I still love you and hope to be able to swee you soon.
