Edwin was born in Glendale, California, in 1932 and grew up in Southeast Los Angeles. He later attended Fremont High School participating in sports including track and field. His favorite event was the 200-yard high hurdles where his unique technical skills made him a success in the sport. He made several friends while at Fremont and kept them close right up to his passing. He graduated with the highest grade point average of his class but was humble about this and other accomplishments. We never knew he achieved the top honor - our dad preferred to lead and live in the moment and by example.
He graduated from Pepperdine College, now Pepperdine University, and at his graduation was accepted at Stanford, USC, and UCLA medical schools. He chose UCLA because of its affordability but still worked many odd jobs to get himself through school. He completed his medical internship at Letterman General Army Hospital in San Francisco. Edwin served in the military as a Captain in Korea, at the 38th parallel, serving as a physician for the United States Army, and Swiss and Swedish delegations.
During his medical internship, Edwin met and after his return from Korea married a nurse, Marcine Bostrom. She was the only love of his life and he cherished her like no other; he found a soul mate in Marcine. The couple had three children, all of whom were with him during his final months and at the time of his death. Our love for him and the confidence in the assurance of his entrance into heaven was powerful and beyond description. This was a reflection of both the love and leadership he showed his family over our parent's 48 years of marriage and his reverence for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Edwin was a caring and compassionate physician. He first practiced at the Lemon Grove Medical Group in Lemon Grove, California, which later became the Rancho San Diego Medical Clinic in Rancho San Diego, and later became a Scripps Clinic satellite. His passion for healthy living including diet and exercise was a cornerstone in the way he lived his life, led his family and advised his patients.
We will miss him dearly but will remember him vividly for so many reasons - and we are confident, we will see him again. Edwin is survived by his wife, Marcine, his three children, Edwin Jr., Christine and Kimberly and their spouses. He is also survived by six grandsons; a niece and two great-nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church located at 8350 Lake Murray Blvd., San Diego, CA 92119-3499. Memorial contributions may be made to either the youth group program at St. Andrew's, address listed above, or to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400 in New York City, NY 10122.
The Grubbs family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to their extended church family, the loving friendship of the Frostroms, for the caring staff at Scripps Clinic Rancho San Diego and all the other longtime faithful friends for the care and support given to Edwin and to all of our family.
