December 7, 1942 – November 24, 2015
Fred passed away on November 24, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in San Diego and lived his life in Chula Vista and La Mesa. Graduating from Chula Vista High School in 1960 and attended both Southwestern College and Grossmont College.
He had many names and descriptions: Beloved husband, Loving father, very special loving Grandfather (Bud, Papa, Pop pop) Brother and Uncle. He leaves behind Pamela, his wife of 43 years; son Robert Drew; daughter-in-law Leilani; four grandchildren Rob, Leilisa, Leilea and Leilorilli; sisters Betty Hicks, Maureen Brown, Shirley Scholz, and Jeannette Franks and brother William Campbell plus many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Maurice and Leona Campbell, grandparents Earnest J. and Connie Campbell, all life time residences of Chula Vista, and grandparents Ray and Grace Crandall of Escondido.
Fred worked in heavy truck sales and engineering for a little over 46 years; the last seven years in Fleet Maintenance for the City of Poway, who had been one of his good customers. He enjoyed heavy trucks and was especially pleased to have some of the trucks he built in the movies and on calendars. He made many dear friends in the trucking industry over the years and at work in Poway. He also owned heavy trucks which were leased to a local company and owned and operated Paxton’s Garage in Chula Vista.
In the years 1976 to 2014, Fred was very involved in Boy Scouts of America serving in many positions: Committee Chair, Assistant Scout Master, Chaplain and was the Scout Master for Troop 324 in La Mesa for 6 years. He spent many years assisting the council as a Unit and Council Commissioner, Dean of the College of Commissioner Science, Broad of Directors, Chairman of the District Advancement Committee and Eagle Scout Board of Review member. Fred was Wood Badge trained and very proud to have been chosen as the permanent Patrol Leader for his Bear Patrol. He earned a number of awards during this time, including the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver and was humbled by receiving the Lamb Award for service to the Lutheran Church. But he was most proud of all the young men he was able to mentor.
After his retirement he kept himself busy with his four grandchildren. Changing diapers, doing crafts, raising Lady Bugs, Butterflies, planting gardens, picking up the children from school, taking them to softball, dancing lessons, swimming, or feeding the ducks at Lake Murray were a few of his activities. The list just goes on and on. Of course, that was for the younger two grandchildren; the older two grandchildren had driving lessons, talks on how to take care of the cars, talks about school and adult things. He loved them all so very much.
Fred was active in church at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Chula Vista and currently at Christ Lutheran Church in La Mesa. He loved singing in the choir, singing with the choir at Sea World and Petco Park was always fun, reading scripture in church and being an Elder working with the church family he loved. Most of all, Fred Loved God.
Fred’s family would like to give a big Thank You to all of his doctors. Especially Dr. Ronald MacIntyre and Dr. Edward Huynh for all their support and loving care.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the foundation that helped with the very costly medicines he was taking. The donations will aid others with the cost of their medicines. Send online at www.PANFoundation.org, in memory of Fred Campbell.
We love you and miss you already.
Your loving family.
