

John was born in Poulan, Georgia on May 9, 1933 and went home to his Lord on September 3, 2013 in La Mesa, California. He grew up in the Florida Panhandle. Upon completing high school, John joined the Navy. He was sent to San Diego for boot camp and never left. While in the Navy he served on the hospital ship USS Repose. He spent a winter in Inchon Harbor, a memorable experience.
Upon his discharge he went to work for Convair as a tool and die maker. While there, he took advantage of computer training they offered and became a computer programmer. While working John went to night classes at SDSU and earned a B.S. The rest of his career was spent in the computer field. He retired in 1985, from Sharp Health Care. In retirement, he spent 10 years as a volunteer with the La Mesa RSVP. Since then he has been a volunteer at the Air and Space Museum's restoration shop at Gillespie Field. John was proud of his 36 Chevy, which he restored himself and his 59 Corvette. He was active in old car activities. He was always willing to give a helping hand and in the past he contributed hard labor to the La Mesa Presbyterian Church.
John married Martha Mawhorter in 1959. John is survived by his loving wife Martha; son John Harrell Jr.; daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and Randy Domingos; brother and sister-in-law George and Helen Harrell; and sister Florine Heggers.
John will be laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA at a later date.
John was much loved and will be deeply missed.
