

He was born Leonard Lewis Smorin in South Bend, Indiana on February 9, 1932, to Adam and Theresa Smorin. He was the third of six children.
Len went to Riley High School, where he excelled in football, becoming an all state center his senior year. Continuining his passion, he played throughout his college years, graduating from San Diego State in 1956.
Following college, Len started his career teaching and coaching at St. Augustine High School. Throughout the years he went on to coach at Hoover High, Kearney High, and San Diego City College. In 1969 he began his tenure for Mesa College. After being promoted to head coach in 1976, Len lead the Olympians to several championships throughout the next 18 years, he was honored with being elected the president of the California Community College Football Coaches Association.
As a coach, Len's love of the game and his love of his team made him popular with his players and fellow coaches. he would go above and beyond for any player, student, or friend; for him they were part of his extended family.
Len is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty, their daughters Mary, Therese, Lisa, Michelle; grandchildren Alysse, Ryan, Jordan, Spencer, Jonathan, Jessica, Colton, Lance; and sisters Dorothy and Gloria.
Funeral Mass will be on Friday, July 27, 2012 - 10 a.m. at Santa Sophia Catholic Church - 9800 San Juan Street, Spring Valley, CA 91977. A reception will follow the Mass, all are invited to join.
Blessed are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest from their labors for their good deeds go with them.
Eternal rest grant unto Leonard, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
