Curtis Dean Abernathy, affectionately called “Sturgis” by his father, was born in Lenoir, N.C. on March 27, 1960, to the late Robert and Juristine Abernathy. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was a toddler. He graduated from John Dewey High School as a star student. After school he met and married his neighborhood sweetheart, Daisy (Peggy) Abernathy. From that union he had two beautiful children, Shania Abernathy and Curtis Abernathy Jr., whom he adored.
Curtis was employed with NYC DOT in New York City. His co-workers cherished his friendship, and everyone enjoyed his witty humor.
Curtis’s strong Christian upbringing created a man of strong moral values and convictions. He enjoyed attending to the needs of others, especially, the elderly. He made time to entertain them with sweet snacks. Cinnamon candy and wafer cookies were his favorites to give. He loved his family. He enjoyed vacationing with his children and grandson. He kept us all laughing with his silly jokes and sarcasm.
Curtis loved his church. He attended Deacon Life of God Christian Outreach. He was a faithful, devoted, well-dressed member. He took pride in wearing a different suit every Sunday. He said that’s what grandaddy wore to church. He served as a deacon and served in various roles in the church.
