
A native of Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of Loy D. and Adda Howland McConnell. She graduated from Derita High School, attended Berry College before graduating from Winthrop College. After teaching for several years, she received her Master’s Degree from UNC Chapel Hill.
In 1951, she married Henry A. (Hal) Jarratt. They made their home in Lenoir where Elizabeth taught English and became the first Guidance Counselor at Lenoir High School. In addition to teaching, she was active in her community and church. She organized Lenoir’s first Girl Scout Troop. She volunteered and served on the board of Yokefellow. She was instrumental in starting several community programs that serviced the elderly in Caldwell County. She wrote and published a history of St. James Episcopal Church in Lenoir, which is still used today as a reference. For the last fifteen years, she has made her home at Highland Farms in Black Mountain, NC.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Carey J. McConnell, her sisters, Alice McConnell and Edith Davies. She is survived by her sister, Lois McCallum, her nieces, Carey Jo Elam and Elizabeth Campbell. Also surviving are three nephews, W.J. (Bud) McConnell, Arch McCallum, Rick McCallum and eleven much loved great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, 16th of July at St. James Episcopal Church in Lenoir, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 806 College Ave. SW, Lenoir, NC 28645 or to the Highland Farms Memory Fund, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
