James Frank Harmon, 87, of Lenoir, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, May 31, 2015.
Mr. Harmon was born in Watauga County to the late Jacob and Jane Vines Harmon. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather and a World War II Army veteran who served in Germany. He was a farmer, fruit orchard foreman, a night watchman in various Lenoir factories and also worked part-time in masonry and carpentry.
His passions were gardening and sharing produce with neighbors and other friends. A generous man, he would help anyone even if it meant giving someone else the shirt off his back. He often hauled scrap wood to others needing it for woodstoves in the winter. His life exemplified the value of hard work.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Joyce Hicks Harmon, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
He is survived by his children, Katie Justice and husband Gregg of Lenoir and Loretta McCall and husband Harold of Lenoir, James Allen Harmon and wife Connie of Elizabethton, TN, and Phil Harmon and wife Audrey of Lenoir; 4 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with Reverend Steve Hedgecock officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Sincerest thanks to Martin Griffin and his staff at AJ’s for their innumerable acts of kindness, to the staff of the Coffee House on the Connelly Springs Road, to the compassionate nursing staff on 4th floor of Caldwell Memorial and to the faithful friends who regularly visited him.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, P O Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
