

John Joseph Porter Sr., 76, of Granite Falls passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Porter was born in Wilkes County to the late James Oscar Porter and Hessie Dancy Porter. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a son; John Porter Jr. and a sister; Jill Pittmon.
He was retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of service. He also served as a Reserve Deputy and Jailer for the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department after his discharge from the Navy. Mr. Porter was also a founding member of the local LIARS Club.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Jean Bentley Porter of the home; his son, James Phillip Porter of Gamewell, a daughter; Beverly Porter Downs and husband Terry of Dallas, Texas; brothers: Jerry Porter of Hudson, Paul Porter of Nebo, Dale Porter of Boomer, Eddie Porter of Lenoir, Sisters; Marie Hatton of Boomer, Becky Porter of Nebo, Rita Hubbard of Boomer, grandchildren; Stephanie Downs Roberts, Melissa Downs, Lacey Downs, Jamie Porter, Scarlet Porter, Deanna Lawson, great grandchildren; Tyler, Kinley and Annabelle Roberts, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Pendry’s Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jesse Carr officiating. Burial will follow the service in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Porter, Jerry Porter, Dale Porter, Jeff Porter, Mike Winkler and Eddie Porter.
