She was born to the late William and May Smale on December 11, 1933, in Palmerton, PA. She graduated from Palmerton High School in 1951 and went on to work in various industries before receiving her cosmetology license in 1971. She loved making her friends and other women feel beautiful through hair and continued to do so well into her 70s.
Doris was an avid skier and outdoor enthusiast who loved to travel and enjoy the scenery of new places. If you looked at her senior yearbook she talked about her desire to travel and she did just that. She took many trips all over the country and Europe with her friends and husband, Harley. Doris even made sure to pass on that love for traveling to her children and grandchildren. She loved country music and country line dancing, a passion she shared with her husband.
Doris had the kindest heart and was never selfish. For many years she would volunteer locally and at her church to help those less fortunate in any way she could. She always took care of those around her which made her an exceptional mother, grandmother and caretaker to her late husband. She was there at the drop of a hat when she was needed and always with a warm smile. Her sassiness and sense of humor never failed to make you laugh and her sharp wit often kept you on your toes. She was truly an angel who walked on this earth for 91 years.
She had the most beautiful and bright smile that made you not help but smile right with her. Her kind voice and warm hugs always knew how to bring you at ease regardless of the situation. Doris was always a vision of beauty.
She loved being a mother and was lucky to spend years being a stay at home mother to her two children who really were her pride and greatest joy in life. She was also the proud grandmother of three beautiful grown women and the great-grandmother to two adorable little boys. She was the true matriarch of her family and a force to be reckoned with. Everyone that knew her loved her and if they didn’t love her they just didn’t know her well enough yet.
Doris married her loving husband, Harley W. Serfass, in 1952 and they cherished 58 beautiful years together. She was a devoted mother to her wonderful children, Randy W. Serfass, of Forest Hills, MD; the late Kim L. Slack and surviving husband Michael, of Morrisville. She is also survived by and will be sadly missed by her loving grandchildren, Rachel Nguyen and husband Bee, of Deptford; Rebecca Blue and husband Tyler, of Hamilton; Victoria Slack, of Morrisville; her great-grandsons: Theo and Milo; her brothers: Herman Smale, of Palmerton; Earl Smale, of Jim Thorpe ; and many nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Harley W. Serfass; her daughter, Kim L. Slack; her brothers and sisters: Florence Smale, Harvey Smale, Clarence Smale, Roy Smale, Mildred Christman, Kenny Smale; and parents William and May Smale.
