Joseph "Joey" Charles Monaghan, 23, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2022 surrounded by his loving family after a very brief battle with a rare sarcoma. On that unordinary day, a very extraordinary young man departed this world much too soon, leaving behind cherished memories that will live on in the hearts and minds of all who had a chance to know and love him.
Joey grew up in Yardley, PA. He will be forever missed by all his loving neighbors in the "Rivermawr" community and all his Pennsbury community friends. Joey attended Quarry Hill Elementary and Pennwood Middle School. One of Joey's most cherished memories was in 8th grade when he received the "Athlete of the Year Award" where he excelled at basketball, football, and track. Joey was a 2017 graduate of Pennsbury High School where he excelled in both academics and athletics. Joey was the Captain for Pennsbury High School. He was the recipient of the Three "D" award (Desire, Drive and Determination) for two consecutive years. Joey was awarded the Suburban One All League Player Award. After high school, Joey attended Marywood University in Scranton, Pa where he graduated with a degree in Exercise Science. As a Scholar-Athlete, Joey was the Captain of the basketball team under the direction of Coach Enrico Mastroianni and Chris Stefalo. Joey made the best memories and the best of friends during his college years and considered all of them family forever.
Joey lived for basketball, it was his life. Joey played for the Lower Bucks County Lightning and Philly Heat AAU men's travel team. Joey made forever friends throughout those years under the direction of Coach Mike McFadden. He considered Coach Mike and his teammates "family" and went on to be Assistant Coach for the Philly Heat AAU Girl's team.
Joey worked several jobs, he was a Camp Counselor at Rising Stock Basketball camp, he worked at Shady Brook Farms, Target, and the Vault Brewery. After college graduation, he was hired by Harris/Blitzer to be a sales associate for the New Jersey Devils, and after two months got promoted to an Account Executive for the Philadelphia 76ers Basketball team (his dream job). Joey made the most amazing friendships in the year that he worked for the Sixers.
Joey enjoyed his annual trip in June with his family to Diamond Beach, New Jersey and his visits to the Pocono Mountains. He loved his annual trips to LBI with his life-long friends. He enjoyed Saturday morning pick- up basketball games with his Church group friends. Joey enjoyed keeping fit and was an avid gym goer. He loved hanging out on the many basketball courts throughout Bucks County.
Joey was known for his corny jokes and "incredible" dance moves but most of all for his absolute pure love of everyone he came in contact with. If you needed a pep talk - Joey was your man. If you needed a ride home at 2 am, Joey would be your guy. Joey didn't have "no" in his vocabulary, and his positivity and the way he approached everything in his life was always with a smile. He never gave up on anything, especially the fight for his very life.
Joey is the beloved son of Susan (nee Curran) and Brian Duffy and most adored brother to Brynn Riley and Aidan Charles. He is the beloved son of Joseph and Bridgit Monaghan and adored brother to Harry. Joey is also survived by his most loving grandmother, Eileen Monaghan and grandparents Charles and Cheryl Duffy. Joey was predeceased by his grandparents Charles and Jane Curran and Hugh Monaghan.
Joey is also survived by several loving aunts and uncles and numerous cherished cousins, and his most adorable God-daughter, Liliana Longo. Joey had an abundance of amazing friends that will be forever impacted by his love, kindness and selflessness.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Friday, September 30, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at James Dougherty Funeral Home 2200 Trenton Rd, Levittown PA and Funeral Mass on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 10:30 am at St. Ignatius of Antioch Church, 999 Reading Avenue, Yardley PA. There will be no calling hours on Saturday morning.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Pennsbury High School Basketball program or Marywood University Basketball program; and to do random acts of kindness because that is what Joey would want us all to do. Always remember W.W.J.D - What would Joey do?
