Michael was born in the Bronx, NY on November 17, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Joan (nee Grimmer); daughter, Dawn Marie Smith (Michael); son, Michael (Michelle); grandsons, Riley, Colin, Liam, Nolan, and Michael “Six” and granddaughter, Teagan Marie; brothers, Thomas (Colleen), John (Anne Marie); sister, Eileen and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by parents Michael and Catherine (nee Kiernan) and his brother, James.
Michael, along with his wife, Joan always kept an open home policy. Family and friends were always invited to holidays and events or just a weekend barbecue and a swim. There was never a question of where Thanksgiving was being held just what time should we be there and what can we bring.
Michael had many jobs throughout his life, from starting in construction to working his way up through many positions in the beer industry. He was able to travel the world for both work and pleasure from trips to France and Scotland to various islands in the Caribbean and Hawaii. Two of his favorite vacation destinations were trips to Oak Island, NC with large family groups and Dawn Beach in St Maarten. One of Michael’s greatest passions was sharing in the lives of his children and grandchildren, He took an active role in coaching his children in various sports. You would often see him on the sidelines of a soccer game, pacing the stands at a baseball game, ‘coaching’ at a basketball game, cheering on the volleyball court, or watching in awe at a dance recital. Never would there be a time he was lacking in having a story to share about his grandchildren.
A diehard Yankees fan, Michael would often be seen watching a game in his favorite chair or hanging on the deck while grilling a delicious meal. His legacy will carry on through all the family events, with the love he showed to all he met. He was a father figure to many and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
