Bill was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 21, 1954 to Herman Neffle, Jr. and Marie Leona (Grosser) Neffle. His parents, sister Pat, and brother Fred preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Herman and Herman’s children, Nick, Leslie and Brandon, and Pat’s two sons, Jason and Steven.
Bill is also survived by his wife of 36 years, Jill (Giardine) Neffle, and his very special daughter Carolyn. When he married into the large Giardine family, he gained a father and mother-in-law, along with many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Bill was the second of four Neffle siblings, but his parents were both only-children, so he was delighted to now have aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Talbot family must also be mentioned. Mark and Chris, along with their twin sons, Ross and Doug, have welcomed and embraced Bill as one of their own. Bill, Jill and Carolyn have shared many special times with them. Doug and Ross were the sons that he never had.
Herman and Marie Neffle were both first generation German-American. The Neffles, going back several generations in Germany, were bakers. Bill’s paternal grandfather was the owner/baker of Neffle’s Bakery in the Country Club Shopping Center in Langhorne, PA. Bill’s parents were the proprietors of Neffle’s Bakery in Fairless Hills, PA. Bill learned how to decorate cakes from his grandfather. He was in charge of decorating and delivering the wedding cakes.
Bill was a 1973 graduate of Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills. His parents closed the bakery around the same time, and Bill then held various jobs before following his father to Starr Transit in Trenton, NJ in 1976. He began a career as a tour bus driver at 21 years of age. If passengers asked his age, he told them 27 because, as he said, “No one wants a 21-year-old bus driver.” For all his 15 years with Starr, he continued to say that he was 27. He drove tours all over the eastern half of the United States and into Canada. It was on one of his charter trips for the Bucks Mount Ski Club of Langhorne, PA that he met his wife Jill.
In 1990, Bill realized his dream of working for UPS (United Parcel Service). He quickly moved through various positions, learning the operations, and was sent to UPS management school in 1993. He was a very dedicated manager. Additionally, he was a United Way Legacy Giver and was part of the leadership team encouraging others to become legacy givers. Bill pursued this goal so vigorously that some of the other UPS managers had a special t-shirt created with a caricature of Bill saying, “You’ve been Neffle-ized!” These t-shirts were available to everyone in the Trenton building with proceeds donated to the United Way. Bill opted for early retirement after over 22 years with UPS. In retirement, he continued to work with a wide variety of companies and entrepreneurial ventures.
Bill took up golf when his daughter Carolyn was quite young. As she got older, he began taking her along with him to ride in the cart. He constantly strived to improve his golf game. He participated in various tournaments and took part in two leagues: King City and Grasshoppers King City Golf League was the highlight of Carolyn’s week because on Wednesdays Bill would pick her up from her Day Program (Visitation Day) to take her with him.
Bill also was a proud Philadelphia Eagles fan and member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, where many members are fans of the New York Giants.
Bill, Jill and Carolyn loved to travel and often enjoyed having family members and friends join them. Bill fell in love with Hawaii on their honeymoon, and they returned many times with Carolyn. The family just returned from a three-week trip to Hawaii where he celebrated his birthday with a round of golf at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort on Maui. Bill said that it was the best golf course he ever played.
The name William signifies a strong, resolute protector with leadership and loyalty traits. He was definitely that. His favorite role was Dad to Carolyn, and he wanted to be certain that she would continue to live a full and happy life. Carolyn’s Day Program is affiliated with Visitation Home, Inc. where people with developmental disabilities, and those without, live together as family.
In lieu of flowers, his family would prefer donations in his memory be sent to:
Visitation Home, Inc., P.O. Box 11242 Hamilton, NJ 08620 https://visitationhome.org/donations
Bill’s family also wants to extend their sincerest thanks to all of the UPMC Carlisle ICU dedicated, patient and caring medical professionals and chaplains that were involved in his care. He could not have had better care anywhere. Bill wished to be an organ donor, so the Gift of Life organization worked with us to make that happen. He would be happy to know that he lives on in others throughout the country and is also helping with medical research.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, January 3, 2026 from 10 am until noon at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA 19056. A celebration of life service will be held at noon. Burial will be at a later date.
