Louis J. Casavant, age 85, passed away on March 26 in Lewiston, Maine surrounded with love and care. Born in April 1940 to Alberta and Antonio Casavant, Louis was a man of quiet strength and steady grace. He did not need many words. He had a smile for everything, which told you all you needed to know.
Louis grew up alongside his siblings Theresa, Connie, Larry, and Antonio Jr. He married the love of his life, Joan, in 1969, building a life and home of their own. Their fifty-seven years together were a living example of commitment: of showing up for each other, through every season, without condition.
Louis spent his working years doing the kind of labor that requires great strength and dependability: shoveling gravel, driving dump trucks, operating heavy equipment. He was not someone who talked about hard work. He simply did it. Those who knew him recognized his pride in a job done right.
If you wanted to find Louis in his element, you did not have to look far. He would be mowing a lawn, taking a Sunday drive, or causing some minor good-natured mischief with his sons, nieces, and nephews at family picnics. He carried the same joy in playing with his grandchildren when they visited.
Louis had many pets growing up including multiple dogs and horses and later found a happiness in his grand-dogs: Cassius, Sherlock, and Winston. He asked for them by name and was happy and peaceful with one settled in his lap.
Louis was a man of strong faith and simple pleasures. He attended Mass faithfully throughout his life, and whenever travel took him somewhere new, his first order of business was finding a church. He was an early riser, up with the sun and out the door before most had opened their eyes. The things he loved were simple ones: fresh fruit topped with cream, onions and rhubarb pulled from the garden, a good cup of coffee with breakfast, a favorite meal shared around a full table.
Louis is survived by his beloved wife Joan; his son James and wife Rebecca, son Jason and wife Lindsay; grandchildren Zachary, Kaeleigh, Rosalie, and Nolan; siblings Connie and Larry; many cherished brothers- and sisters-in-law, and a wide and devoted circle of nieces and nephews whose lives were made richer for knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents Alberta and Antonio; his siblings Theresa and Antonio Jr.; and his granddaughter Alice.
Louis, also known lovingly as “Lou”, “Dad”, “Uncle Louis”, “Grandpa”, and “Papa Jo”, will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.
