Louis P. Gagne

AUBURN - Louis-Philippe Gagne, Jr., 84, of Auburn, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016. He was born in Lewiston, the son of Ernestine Hamann Gagne and Louis-Philippe Gagne, and was a 1950 graduate of St. Dom’s where he was known as “Chief Joker” because of his trademark sense of humor. Growing up, he loved baseball and music, singing with his siblings in “Le Septuor Gagne,” a group formed by his father, Mayor Louis P. Gagne.

On June 9, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Yolande Couture, and they ventured to Connecticut and Long Island, NY, where he began a long career in the airline industry first with Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) at Idlewild Airport (now JFK). In 1967, he was hired as Station Manager for Executive Airlines at the Auburn-Lewiston Airport, and in 1971 with Air New England at the Portland Jetport. In 1981, he relocated from Cape Elizabeth to Clearwater, Florida, and worked in various management positions at Tampa Int’l Airport for Florida Express, Braniff Airways and Cayman Airways.

He was a man with a big personality, great work ethic, a strong sense of pride and lots of faith…and a trademark whistle he’d use to call his family together. He enjoyed collecting records and listening to treasures he picked up at yard sales.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Bartholomew Council in Cape Elizabeth, and later with the St. Pius X Council in Portland, and was also active in church choirs.

Mr. Gagne is predeceased by three sisters: Julienne St. Pierre, Cecil Rancourt and Yvette Williams. In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his brother Andre (Monique) Gagne of Lewiston, sisters Marguerite Thibeault of Lewiston and Denise Morin of Auburn, as well as his five children: Suzanne Roy (Ronald) of Mystic, CT, Louis Philippe Gagne III of Westbrook, Michele Mann (Greg) of Newport Richey, FL, Paul Gagne (Jamie Boulay) of Portland and Anne Marie Ramos (Ray) of Lakeland, FL.

Survivors also include four grand-children: Chantelle Kimball, Christopher Roy, Chelsea Mann and Clinton Grubb, two great-grand-children, Emma and Katie Kimball, and many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the amazing staff of Clover Manor and suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to The Hospice House in Auburn.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial honoring Louis’s life will be celebrated 11:00 AM FRIDAY January 8th in the lower Chapel of the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul. Committal prayers to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery Chapel.
