Born in 1935, in Manila, Philippines, Manuel was the son of Martin and Paz Sangalang. He graduated with his Medical Doctor degree in 1962 from Manila Central University, a foundation that launched a distinguished career in medicine marked by compassion and tireless dedication.
Following his graduation, Manny completed an internship and residency at San Lazaro Hospital in the Philippines in 1965 before immigrating to Canada. He completed a Surgery Residency in 1969 at Saint John General Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada, where he met the love of his life, Mary Redding. Shortly after, they moved to the United States to embark on their careers.
Manny and Mary soon settled in Lewiston, Maine, where they were married in 1970 and raised their family. Manny accepted a role as an Emergency Room Physician at St. Mary's Hospital, where his quick thinking and medical expertise forged many lasting relationships within the Lewiston community. Fortunately, he was guided by colleagues at the hospital to get his children into Cheerleading and Hockey in the Lewiston community. He was known to even step onto the ice to treat injured players as needed. In 1982, he transitioned to private practice, opening the Maine Industrial Medical Center, a Family Practice where he treated many families over the years with deep compassion and meticulous care.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Sangalang was deeply committed to brotherhood and philanthropy. He was a proud 35-year member of the Ashlar Lodge in Auburn - a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason with the Valley of Androscoggin and Portland. He dedicated his time to the Kora Temple Shriners organization for 34 years, where he rose to the esteemed position of Director of the Medical Corps and also joined the Order of the Quetzalcoatl. He was a man of diverse interests, enjoying golfing, table tennis, martial arts, hand painted artwork, and bowling throughout his life.
Manuel’s greatest joy was his family. Known as "Lolo" to his five grandchildren, he was always overjoyed to spend time with them. He is survived by his loving wife of many decades, Mary Sangalang; his daughter, Ellen Harding, and her husband, Ed, along with their children, Matthew, Cameron, and Madison; and his son, Andrew Sangalang, and his wife, Christine, along with their children, Ryan and Ruby.
