Mary S. Reed

years and 4 months after a short illness. Mary was bora in Parkman, Maine on May 17,1916,

the daughter of Jesse and Jessie (Hamilton) Smart.

She graduated from Gorham State Teachers College and went on to teach for many years.

She began her career in Veazie and ended her career in Buxton, where she taught for most of her

teaching years. She was respected as an excellent teacher, beloved of all who were fortunate to

have had her in their classroom. She was especially dedicated to helping children become good

readers and had a great deal of success in that area. She retired from teaching in the late 1970's.

Mary was an active member of DAR, which was a great source of pride for her. She was

an avid gardener and found a great deal of pleasure creating beautiful flowers wherever she

lived. Mary took her faith seriously. At the time of her death she was a member of the Bar

Harbor Congregational Church, UCC, but she and her husband had shared many happy years at

the United Parish Congregational Church in Harrison, Maine.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters, her beloved

husband, Sherman H. Reed, her son, Wallace S. Reed, and two grandsons, Timothy and Wallace

Reed.

She is survived by her daughter, Deanna Peters of Port Charlotte, FL, daughter-in-law,

Sandra M. Reed of Bar Harbor, ME, grandson, Neil (Ramona) Peters, granddaughters, Katie

Peters, Ellen L. Reed (Jim), and Melissa Reed Young (Duston). She is also survived by greatgrandchildren,

Cameron, Shannen, Cassady and Ashlyn. She will be lovingly remembered by

her sister-in-law, Wilma Jordan, nieces, nephews, many good friends, colleagues and former

students.

Graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts in Mary's name may be
