

Steve was born on March 5, 1956 the son of Patrick and Charlotte (Cummings) Sherlock in Queens, NY. His life became upheaval when his parents separated and eventually divorced. After completing the Second Grade, Steve was sent to live with his grandparents Charles and Louisa Cummings in Lewiston, Maine.
He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1974 as a 3 Sport Letterman- cross country, indoor and Spring Track and Field. He later graduated from Purdue University. While at Purdue, Steve was involved in student government. He was president of his form of more than 1,600 students and also served in the student senate.
At this time, he started coaching the track and field program with the Lewiston Rec Department for ten years. He turned to coaching in 1982 at both Lisbon High School and Brunswick High School. He coached numerous state championships. His teams won 13 out of 17 Conference Championships and his 1985 Brunswick girls won the Class A State Championship.
While coaching, he developed a relationship with the sports desk at the Lewiston Sun-Journal. They offered him a job that turned into a 42 year career, from Sports Editor to numerous other journalism beats, with his favorites of Veterans, Government, Stars and Stripes Military Newspaper, Entertainment Section and education at his time of death.
He won a number of writing and design awards at the State and National level. His story on Joan Benoit Samuelson running in presumably her final Boston Marathon who won Third Place in the 2009 AP Sports Editor Award.
He met the love of his life Paula Masselli in high school, but fate largely kept them apart. For 18 months they wrote letters to each other weekly until they drifted apart. However, love was always there. They finally reconnected after 36 years in 2011. Their first lunch date lasted 11hours at a local restaurant as they reminisced about the twist and turns of their life. Not wanting to lose her for a second time, he engaged her in less than a year and they hosted a memorable wine themed wedding at Poland Spring in 2015, a true Hallmark Story.
Steve and Paula loved to explore every corner of the state of Maine, some of their favorite trips included stays in Lubec, Greenville, Monhegan Island, Arcadia and the Maine Wine Trail. They also enjoyed memorable trips to Mobile, Alabama, the fingerlakes and 1,000 Islands area of NY and Hershey, PA.
In his free time, Steve enjoyed genealogy. He had a relative on the Mayflower. Another relative who was one of the first settlers in Salem, MA in the 1630’s and testified in the Salem Witch Trials. He belonged to the Issac Cummings Family Association.
Steve also enjoyed going on day trips, attending concerts, theater, going out to eat, playing trivia on the “clueless” team of which they often won first place. He followed the Red Sox and Patriots. A summer was never complete without a visit to Five Islands Lobster Shack in Georgetown and Erika’s in Harpswell. He was a 40 year member of the Central Maine Football Forecasters Association.
He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Masselli, his stepdaughters Jessica, Brianne and Mackenzie; four step grandchildren Vincent, Adelyn, Mallory and Harison; his in-laws Mike and Madeleine Masselli; brother-in-law Joey Masselli (Annette) and niece Melina Masselli; an uncle Richard Cummings in Estero, FL; and an aunt Mary Rockenon in NYC.
Steve was predeceased by his parents; a stepfather Clinton; and his sister Laura Sherlock.
Family and friends are invited to join for a visitation on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 from 2-6 PM at The Fortin & Pinette Group in Lewiston.
