Benjamin E. Lemons, 85, of West Columbia, S.C., passed away March 5, 2024, after a brief illness. Ben was born September 11, 1938, in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated from Gray High School in Winston-Salem, NC, and went on to earn a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1961. Ben had a distinguished 35-year career with Honeywell, starting at predecessor firm Allied Chemical in Baton Rouge, LA., as a swing shift supervisor, and retiring in 1996 from the Columbia, SC, Site as one of the plant managers. He was an active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in West Columbia for more than 50 years, singing in the choir for many of those years. He loved his family above all else and was extremely proud of his grandchildren. Ben enjoyed having regular lunches with many of his old work colleagues where they could brag about their families and tell stories about the old days at the plant.
Ben was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy; his parents, Harold and Mildred Lemons; and an infant daughter, Lori Ann. He is survived by son, Chris Lemons of Winston-Salem, NC; son, Patrick Lemons of Charlotte; and his pride and joy, his two granddaughters, Caroline Lemons and Annie Lemons of Charlotte. The family wishes to thank all who cared for Ben over the past few years: the caregivers from Daybreak, as well as neighbor Terrell C., who was a great friend to Ben and Judy, and always made himself available to help them when needed.
A private burial service for family and close friends will take place in Winston-Salem, NC, at Forsyth Memorial Park at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1500 Sunset Blvd, West Columbia, SC 29169 or to the North Carolina State University Chemical Engineering Fund, at NC State Engineering Foundation, 915 Partners Way, Fitts-Woolard Hall, Room 4220, Campus Box 901, Raleigh, NC, 27695.
