

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Dorothy Johnson Crews, 88, died Monday, August 8, 2011. She was the widow of Charles F. Crews, M.D. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 11, at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church in Lexington, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Crews's grandsons, nephew, Michael Johnson, and Dr. Melton Stuckey will be pallbearers.
Mrs. Crews was born November 21, 1922, in Chappells, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Robert and Cola Johnson. She was a 1943 graduate of the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia. As a Registered Nurse, she worked at Baptist Hospital, as well as helping with all facets of Dr. Crews's surgical practice for over 30 years.
As a tribute to her many years of nursing alongside him, her husband Dr. Crews established the Dorothy Johnson Crews Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Medical University of South Carolina's College of Nursing. Dr. and Mrs. Crews have also been honored with the recent establishment of the Dr. and Mrs. Charles F. Crews Nursing Scholarship at Lexington Medical Center.
Mrs. Crews was a longtime member of the Ivy Garden Club of Columbia, an avid gardener, and particularly enjoyed growing roses. She loved to sew, knit, and crochet, and recently received the United Methodist Women's special recognition pin for her contributions to the prayer shawl ministry at Mount Horeb United Methodist Church. She lived her life as a dedicated servant to others.
Mrs. Crews is survived by her four children, Diane C. Hazelrigg, Lynn C. Boyleston (Larry), Charles F. Crews, Jr. (Debra), and Carolyn C. Middlebrooks (Gil). She is survived by ten grandchildren, Dee Hazelrigg Walker (Wesley), Matt Boyleston (Abby), Charlie Hazelrigg (Stephanie), Mary Catherine Crews Fowler (Will), Brent Boyleston, Debra Dele Crews, Bobby Hazelrigg, Nikki Middlebrooks, Charlee Crews Green (Robbie), and Charlie Middlebrooks; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Crews, M.D.; her brother, Ralph Johnson; and her sister, Helen Johnson Fraysse.
