Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Polk Marr, 93, of Chapin, SC passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2025. She was born October 25, 1932 in Walterboro, SC to Edgar E. Polk and Susie McLane Polk. She grew up in Varnville, SC where she met her husband, Raymond L. Marr, and they married January 16, 1950.
The most important things in Betty’s life were Faith and Family but she was an accomplished professional as well. Betty retired in 1974 as Assistant Vice President with First National Bank of SC, working in the Personnel Department. Some of her favorite things were seeing the leaves change in the mountains of NC every October, the annual family week at the beach with the Brown family from Atlanta, the Polk Thanksgiving family reunion in the low country, Christmas and Birthdays. She was a very active member of Chapin Christian Community Church (formerly Chapin United Methodist Church) where she loved her Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class and singing in the Adult Choir. She especially enjoyed participating in the Christmas Cantatas. She was a graduate of the Disciple Bible Study, a member of the United Methodist Women and on the Bereavement Committee. She organized the Susannah Wesley Circle and the Flowers’ Circle. Betty was also very competitive from the time she was young. She was the Captain of the girls’ basketball team at Varnville High School. She enthusiastically played competitive tennis until not too many years ago and assisted in organizing the Chapin Women’s Tennis Quads. She was an avid bridge player and played regularly in many groups. Betty also had a creative side and enjoyed being a member of The Chapin Garden Club.
Betty is survived by one son, Raymond “Ray” L. Marr, Jr. (Sue) of Columbia, SC, daughter, Annette “Ann” Marr of Lexington, SC, two grandsons, Raymond “Lee” L. Marr, III (Jeni) of Lexington, SC, Jonathan “Jon” E. Marr (Emily) of Horse Shoe, NC, five great grandchildren including Lennox and Elliot of Lexington, SC and Eleanor “Nora”, Cecilia “Ceci” and Clara of Horse Shoe, NC, her sister, Virginia “Dickie” McClure (Frank) of Varnville, SC, brother William Polk (Ginny) of Beaufort, SC, Sister-in-Law, Ellen T. Polk (Douglas) of Roanoke, VA as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, greats, grands and other extended family too numerous to possibly list.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 75 years, Raymond, her brother, Edgar “Gene” Polk and his wife Riley Claire “Sissy” Polk, brother Douglas “Doug” Polk and his first wife Lucy Schamber Polk and her Brother-in-law, Frank McClure (Dickie).
