LEXINGON – Floyd Richard Harmon, Sr., 80, died December 23, 2015. Born in Lexington County, Mr. Harmon was the husband of Barbara King Harmon, and the son of the late Milford Leon and Orrie Belle Swygert Harmon.
Always a hard worker, Mr. Harmon began working at age 14 as a bag and delivery boy in a local grocery and worked continuously thereafter until retirement from his own business in December, 2014. He was also a retired master sergeant following many years of honorable service in the SC Army National Guard. A man of relatively few words but a keen sense of observation, he will be remembered as a good man and a particularly diligent provider for his family. Mr. Harmon grew up as a Lutheran, proud that he worked as a young man in digging the foundation of Pilgrim Church in Lexington; later, he was an active Methodist. He enjoyed boating on Lake Murray as a younger man, all kinds of mechanics, Gamecock football, Nascar and later go-cart racing, and country music.
He is survived in addition to his wife of 59 years by sons, F. Richard Harmon, Jr. of Columbia, and James Chadwick Harmon and his husband, Mark A. Bouknight of Charleston; daughter, Melanie H. Marchant and her husband, Randall of Cayce; grandchildren, Joshua B. Marchant and his wife, Nikki of Cayce, and Shannon M. Haase and her husband, Jordan of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Taylor B. Marchant and Ashlyn L. Marchant of Cayce; sisters, Wilhelmina H. Miller of Lexington, and Frances H. Shealy of Gilbert; sister-in-law, Jacqueline V. Harmon; several nieces and nephews; and extended family and special friends, Harvey W. Mathews of Columbia and David B. Mahaffey of Lexington. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harmon was predeceased by his brothers, Benny G. Harmon, M. Franklin Harmon, and Robert Carroll Harmon.
In view of the holiday season, Mr. Harmon’s service will be private at a later date. His family requests that those who wish to remember him do so only with kind words and good memories, and gifts to worthy charities of their choice. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington, is assisting Mr. Harmon’s family.
