Franklin Leonard Selman Jr.

Franklin “Frank” Leonard Selman, Jr., 86, went home to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 25, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was held close by his devoted wife, his daughter and son-in-law, and his three cherished grandchildren just as he had held them close throughout his life.

Frank was born on February 5, 1939, in Foley, Florida, to the late Franklin Leonard Selman, Sr. and Mildred Stewman Selman. During his elementary school years, his family moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where Frank would put down deep roots. It was there he met his lifelong best friend, Dr. W. Lynn Campbell—a friendship marked by loyalty, laughter, and countless shared memories that spanned more than 70 years.

Frank graduated from Columbia High School in 1957 and attended the University of South Carolina, where, during his sophomore year, he met the love of his life, Sandra Taylor. From the moment they met, their story began, one built on faith, devotion, and partnership. Frank was a proud member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was honored as “Most Outstanding PIKA.” He also served honorably in the South Carolina National Guard from 1957 to 1963.

Frank and Sandra were married on October 16, 1960, at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in downtown Columbia, beginning a beautiful marriage that lasted more than 65 years. Frank began his career in the family business before joining Southern Railroad as a conductor. In 1983, he was promoted to Trainmaster in Savannah, Georgia, a role he carried out with integrity, dedication, and pride until his retirement in 1995.

Faith was the steady anchor of Frank’s life. For over 60 years, he and Sandra were devoted members of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, where Frank served faithfully in many roles—including Chairman of the Trustees, Discipleship teacher, and a long-time member of the Lifestyle Relational Evangelism (LRE) Ministry. He was deeply involved in United Methodist Men and was honored as “Man of the Year” by the United Methodist Women. To the children of the church, he was lovingly known as “Mr. Church.” Sweet Kayleen asked Frank one day “Are you God?”. Frank gently replied “No, why?’ She said “because you have white hair and are always at the church.” Later, Frank and Sandra found a new church home at Mt. Horeb Church in Lexington, where they worship alongside their daughter and her family.

Frank found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. He loved fishing—especially with his dear friend Lynn—and took great pride in catching, cleaning, and frying fresh fish, always served with his famous hushpuppies. Golf was another passion. As a scratch golfer, Frank treasured time spent on the course at Lexington Country Club with his friends, enjoying both the game and the camaraderie.

Above all else, Frank loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud and loving father to his daughter, Senta, and an attentive, affectionate grandfather who delighted in each of his three grandchildren. He was fully present listening, guiding, encouraging, and making every family gathering meaningful. His wisdom was quiet, his strength steady, and his love unwavering.

Frank lived his life firmly rooted in his faith and in the promises of God. He served humbly, taught faithfully, and led by example. His legacy of kindness, service, and steadfast love will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.

While we grieve his absence, we rejoice in the assurance that Frank is now whole, restored, and at peace in the presence of his Savior. His was a life well lived and a homecoming well deserved. Until we meet again, we hold fast to the promise of eternal life and the truth that love never ends.

Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sandra Taylor Selman of Columbia; his daughter, Senta Selman Hinzman and his son-in-law Michael Hinzman of Lexington; his grandchildren, Kenneth Paul Cox, Jr., Makayla Grace Hinzman, and Michal Brooke Hinzman; his sister, Vivian Selman King, preceded in death by her husband, Tazwell Aubrey King; his sister-in-law, Susan Selman, wife of the his late brother Steve Erwin Selman, and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parent’s and his brother Robert Lee Selman.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Mt. Horeb Church, 1205 Old Cherokee Road, Lexington, South Carolina. The family will receive friends following the service.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, love, and support during this time. A special thank you is extended to the compassionate hospice caregivers who provided comfort, dignity, and care in Frank’s final days.
