
LEXINGTON – A memorial service for George Lorenzo Long, Jr., 77, of Lexington will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Mr. Long was born July 9, 1938 in Union, SC and passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016. He was the son of the late George L. Long, Sr. and Mary Charping Long. Mr. Long worked as a hospital Administrator/CEO for numerous hospitals to include Providence Hospital in Columbia, Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, AL and Flint River Hospital in Montezuma, GA. Mr. Long retired from Wilbur Smith Associates in 2010 after 24 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Croxton Long; his children, Kathy Collins, Rob Long, Jett Jerome, Jenny Kelley and Sarah Council; ten grandchildren, Bill and Steve Collins, Rachel McMillion, Matt and Luke Peaster, Alex, Jennie and Jessie Jerome, and Kelly and Izzy Council; great-grandson, River McMillion, and his sister and brother-in-law, MaryAnn and Bill Aycock of Gastonia, NC.
Mr. Long was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. He was known as a hardworking, devoted family man. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and a graduate degree at the University of Alabama. He received the “Order of the Palmetto” award by the Governor for his work with race relations and women’s rights. Mr. Long served on the national board of directors for the American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) as the NC and SC representative.
The family will receive friends and family following the service on Wednesday at the Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
