Hendrik Schutte was a devoted father to his two sons, a loving and faithful husband to his wife, a cherished son, and a brother bound by deep loyalty and affection. He was born on June 27, 1933, in The Hague, The Netherlands, and passed away on January 19, 2026.
Hendrik lived a remarkable life shaped by resilience, courage, and determination. He grew up in the Netherlands during the hardships of World War II, experiences that forged his strength and character at an early age. With little more than hope and nineteen dollars to his name, he later emigrated to the United States in search of opportunity and a better future.
Shortly thereafter, Hendrik was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. Because of his knowledge of the German language, he served in Germany rather than Korea, where his dedication and leadership allowed him to quickly rise through the ranks. Following his military service, he began a long and successful career in the airline industry, where he worked for more than forty years.
Despite having limited formal education due to childhood asthma, Hendrik consistently proved that perseverance, integrity, and hard work matter far more than circumstance. In every role he held, he earned respect through his commitment and character.
His brother, Reinier Schutte, shares this final message: “My lovely brother, thank you for everything you have done for me.”
Hendrik is survived by his sons, John and Henry Schutte; John’s wife, Sarah Schutte; his beloved grandson, Ethan Schutte; and his brother, Reinier Schutte. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the life he built, and the example he set for all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on January 24, 2026 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel, located at 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC, 29072.
