

Herbert J. Gladden, Jr., age 92, of Lexington, South Carolina passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024. He was born on November 15, 1931, in Great Falls, SC to the late Cynthia Easler and Herbert J. Gladden, Sr.
Herbert served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and after his active duty, served 26 years in the Air Force Reserves. He started his business career with Southern Bell Telephone in South Carolina, retiring after 32 years with Southern Bell and BellSouth. During those years, Herbert also served as Music Minister and Pastor in Windsor and Aiken, South Carolina, attending theological seminary at night to attain his degree in Theology. He then served as an Interim Pastor and Church Planter from Red Bank Baptist Church. He also served as Pastor and Pastor Emeritus at Lake Murray Baptist Church, Lexington, a church he helped form.
Herbert was active in many business and charity organizations, as a member of Kiwanis International, Rotary International and on the Board of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. In his early years after the Air Force, he was a member of the gospel quartet, The Southerneers, singing bass and lead for the group.
He had many interests, including cooking the perfect pancake. He was an avid bowler and golfer, having continued bowling into his late 80’s and had two hole-in-one’s after his 70th birthday. He enjoyed feeding/watching the deer and Bluebirds in his backyard.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Sherer Gladden; sons, Gregory Todd Gladden (Valerie) of Buford, GA , Thomas Clark Gladden (Tammy) of Lexington, and Hue C. Tang (TrucAnh), of Irmo; daughter, Angela G. Kirk (David) of Lexington; grandchildren, Nicholas M. Day of Lexington, Dana Jones (Freddie) of Atlanta GA, Amy Mack (Chris) of Atlanta GA, Ryan Meyers of Buford GA, Nathan T. Gladden (Brittany) of Lexington, Brady N. Howard (Matthew) of Lexington, J. Conner Gladden of Lexington, and Helena A. Tang of Irmo; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Mack, Kyndal Mack, Elle Rose Day, Griffin T. Gladden, Dahlia Day, Violet Day, Bryce Jones, Aubrey Jones and Hampton C. Howard.
The family would like to send a special thanks to the LMC North Tower 8th Floor Medical Staff and to Amedisys Hospice Care Staff for their loving and respectful care of our precious Father.
A memorial service will be held at Red Bank Baptist Church, 1357 South Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29073, on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 1:30 PM. The family will be having a private burial.
