
LEXINGTON – Funeral services for Herbert E. Sharpe, Sr., 79, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Pallbearers will be Dr. Vasa Cate, Jim McFarland, Patrick McFarland, Bryan Paschal, David Etheredge and Carlos Salter.
Mr. Sharpe was born May 10, 1934 in Columbia, SC and passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014. He was a son of the late William H. Sharpe and Evelyn Etheredge Sharpe. Mr. Sharpe was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina in 1956. He retired from South Carolina Electric and Gas Company in 1989 following 29 years of service to join the Gamecock Club Staff. Mr. Sharpe served as the Gamecock Club Assistant Director from 1989 until August, 1995 when he moved into an interim director’s role following the retirement of Art Baker. In 1996, he was officially named the Gamecock Club Director, a position he held until 1999. A longtime member of the Gamecock Club, Mr. Sharpe also served as the Gamecock Club Board of Directors Chairman for five years and was president of the Lexington County Gamecock Club Chapter for six years. As an avid golfer, club memberships included: The Country Club of Lexington, a founding member of Golden Hills Golf and Country Club and a former member of the University Club (Cobblestone) and Ponderosa Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Paschal Sharpe of Lexington; sons, Herbert E. “Herb” Sharpe (Jean) of Charlotte, NC and Grady P. Sharpe of Lexington; brother, William Herman Sharpe (Elizabeth) of Elgin; grandchildren, Mary Chandler Sharpe, Molly Jane and Meredith Caroline Sharpe and 5 nephews.
