Jean Latham Raynor of West Columbia died peacefully on January 11, 2026, at the age of 99. Born June 19,1926 in Sharon, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late John William Latham and Gaynell Goforth Latham.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Bruce Elwin Raynor. One of nine children, she was predeceased by sisters Evelyn Keithly, Agnes McGlohorn, Margie Riggins Ogburn, and brothers Ralph Latham, John Latham, Fred Latham, and Frank Latham. She is survived by her sister Frances Richardson (George).
She was the beloved mother of two daughters, Linda Ann Berry (Charles Berry-deceased) of Gilbert and Mary Gale Hook (I.D.) of West Columbia. She was the “Granny” of four Grandchildren, Dee Dee Hook Brogan (Jim), Chuck Berry (Jennifer), Jamie Hook (Elizabeth), and Melissa Berry Baqui (Mark); and ten Great-Grandchildren, Mary Caroline Brogan Mackenzie (Danny), Elizabeth Grace Brogan, Bryce Berry, Kenadie Berry, Witt Hook, Preston Hook, Anna Cate Hook, Mason Rogers, Marley Baqui and Beck Lynne Baqui.
Jean fondly reminded her children and grandchildren that she memorized 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 in the fourth grade. She graduated from Sharon High School, where she enjoyed acting in school plays, played on the softball team, and won a beauty contest.
Jean loved her church, Trinity United Methodist Church in West Columbia, where she served as treasurer of her Sunday School class for many years.
Jean retired from Fruit of the Loom Jay Products, where she worked for 36 years making elastic. After her retirement, she and her husband were active volunteers in the community, delivering Meals on Wheels for about 6 years. She loved traveling with her beloved husband, Bruce, and their friends, touring most of the United States on senior citizens’ trips with Capital Tours and enjoying several cruises. They also spent much of their time on Folly Beach at a family home and camping with their children and grandchildren. They also enjoyed season Gamecock football tickets and tailgating at home games.
Jean was a very positive person who loved to read her devotional books and newspapers, especially cartoons. Always thoughtful and caring, Jean had the gift of making others feel comfortable and welcome, and they felt better just being around her. Every visit with Jean was followed by, “The Lord’s been good to me!” She was an extraordinary mother, wife, aunt, “Granny,” and friend who lived out her values and integrity throughout her life. All who knew Jean will miss her beautiful smile and caring heart.
The family is grateful to the physicians and staff at National Health Care and Caris Hospice, as well as the staff at The Pines Assisted Living facility, for their care during Jean’s final days.
