LEXINGTON - Joan Muse Summers, widow of Russell Roscoe Summers, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Lexington Medical Extended Care. She had struggled with neuropathy for four years and more recently with PVD (Peripheral Vascular Disease).
Joan was born to Ezra Monroe “Bub” and Lottie Maloy Muse on January 16, 1929. She attended Brookland-Cayce High School. She was a buyer for Belk in several departments for 33 years, and made many close friends in retail on their quarterly treks to New York. Family was very special to Joan. She loved her extended family and the fun she had being with them. Family loved her too and anointed her our “Matriarch.” She was a very nurturing person and was the first to help out anyone without thinking twice. Joan loved her church and was a lifelong member, 83 years, of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia. She helped in many areas of the church over the years and was a proud member of the Ladies Aid Society, a circle her mother joined as a charter member.
Joan adored her only child, Terry Ray Tucker and her husband, Lance. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them and especially their two sons, Derek and Dustin. She finally became a great-grandmother 7 ½ months ago with the birth of Catherine Ray Tucker, daughter of Dustin and Sara. She was blessed to be godmother to Meg Campbell Sloan, daughter of Mike and Rhett Campbell. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Russ; parents, Maloy and Bub Muse and sisters and brothers-in-law, Ora and Truedell Yonce, Ray and Alva Campbell and Clara Stuart Muse. Surviving family are nieces and nephews, Monroe and Kay Yonce, H. T. and Cathy Yonce and Mike and Rhett Campbell and many grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church with Pastor Glenn Boland and Pastor J. A. Keisler officiating. Visitation will be l hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Campbell, Bill Campbell, Monroe Yonce, Jimmy Scurry, H. T. Yonce, Ty Yonce and Kenny Risinger. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Ladies Aid, Belk lunch friends, Carolyn Riddick and best friend, Ruth Hill.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Crewes Point LMEC for the excellent care and fun given “Cinderella,” their pet name for Ms. Summers. Our deep appreciation also to Hospice Care of Tri-County for all of their personnel who made Joan’s last days peaceful and who showed great respect to our family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 B Avenue, West Columbia, SC 29169 for the Stained Glass Windows Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Momma, you have been a wonderful role model, mother and best friend. It’s hard to let go, but I know you have achieved the greatest gift of all to be with our Heavenly Father. I’m so proud of you and grateful for all you’ve done for me and anyone who has crossed your path.
I love you so. Terry
