Commander Jon Philip Monson, USN (Retired)

Born in Savannah, Georgia on October 30, 1939 to Eric G.W. and Mabel C. Monson, he was the youngest of their three children. After graduating from Savannah High School, he put himself through college. He was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia. Go Dawgs! He then spent the next 22 years of his life as an officer in the United States Navy. During this time, he married his love, Sylvia Smoak Monson, and they had four children. Upon retiring from the Navy, Mr. Monson continued working in the area of finance. He retired from the South Carolina Research Authority in 2006.

Mr. Monson was an avid traveler. He visited multiple countries during his lifetime and loved taking family and friends with him. Upon his father’s death, Mr. Monson became passionate about researching family genealogy. He made many family connections in Sweden and maintained a relationship with them until his passing.

He loved and was loved by his family. Known as “YEM” by his grandchildren, he provided them with love and guidance. His passing has left a hole in our hearts, but we are comforted in knowing that we will be reunited again one day in God’s heavenly kingdom.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Monson Marcolini (Chris), Jon Philip Monson II (Ellen), Christopher Patrick Monson (Natalie) and Michael Keith Monson; grandchildren, Haleigh Marcolini Brown (Adam), Christopher Jon Joseph Marcolini, Ashley Lynn Monson, Audrey Lynn Monson (Jewel), Mary Allison Goetz (Chris), Dewey James Flynn (McKenzie), Timothy Daniel Pate; and great grandchildren, Jarod Goetz, Austin Goetz, Tristan Pate, Shelby Goetz, Jacob Russell and Baylor Flynn.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 12, 2023 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 11 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
