COLUMBIA - Leon Charles Campbell, 84, died May 29, 2017. He was born on April 28, 1933 in Marion, SC to the late Leon B. and Ruth Mayers Campbell, and grew up in Marion. He graduated from Marion High School and served in the U.S. Army. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina.
Affectionately known as Red, he started his own engineering firm, Leon Campbell and Associates, in 1968. His company helped improve the quality of life for many rural South Carolina communities by building water and wastewater systems. Most notably, he initiated programs for Georgetown County Water and Sewer Authority and others in the Myrtle Beach region. Leon Campbell and Associates was one of the design firms for the City of Columbia as it expanded its utility system in the 1980’s. He was proud to be a part of the City’s design team for the Beautification of the Congaree Vista. Other clients included the SC Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
Accomplishments in the field were many, but it is the impact on family and friends that we remember the most. We have been blessed by his love and friendship, and our lives have and will continue to be richer for it.
Red is survived by his wife, Frances Hitchcock Campbell and his children, Ted Campbell (Robin), Bridget Longway (Mike MacDougall), Lynn Campbell (Renee Black), and Tim Campbell. He was the proud grandfather to Drayton Campbell Weldon (Tim), Gregory Longway (Kayla), Blair Campbell, Courtney Longway and Brantley Campbell. His three great-grandchildren, Blakely, Bentley and Barrett, were a true delight. Other survivors include his brother, Mike Campbell (Cindy); sister, Betty DeFreese, (Paul Flondarina); nephew, Mike DeFreese (Stephanie), sister-in-law, Nancy Blanton and son-in-law, Jeff Longway. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Bennett and his beloved daughter, Suzanne Campbell.
The family would like to thank Leon’s caregivers, Mary Ann Wise, Sara Adams and Mike Golob.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Children Chance, 13 Surrey Ct., Ste. 200, Columbia, SC 29212.
