
LEXINGTON – Funeral service for Mary Elizabeth Smith Wingard will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Bush River Road, Columbia. The family will receive friends after the service in the mausoleum chapel. Mrs. Wingard was born on September 2, 1913 and passed away peacefully at her home in Lexington, SC on February 13, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Annie Mae Gelston Smith and Robert Carlisle Smith. She was married to Colonel John T. Wingard, deceased.
She is survived by sisters-in-law, Patty C. Wingard and Ruth W. Caughman; nieces, Georgia Berger and Charlotte Compton and nephews, Tom and Cliff Wingard. She was preceded in death by her brother, Buck C. Smith; sister-in-law, Alys Whaley Smith; brothers-in-law, Elbert, Walter and Chris Wingard; nephew, Steve Caughman, and cousins, Marion and William Draffin.
She was a faithful and active member of Incarnation Lutheran Church, a member of the Couples Sunday School class, the Sewing Circle and Happy Wanderers. She faithfully served in the United Methodist Soup Kitchen for many years. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, was a teacher and basketball coach in the Lexington public schools, an avid golfer, homemaker, gardener, and always had a great sense of humor.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to DayBreak Adult Care Services, caregivers, Francis Hendrix and Mary Hendrix and to Heartstrings Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Incarnation Lutheran Church, 3005 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
