Ruth Wingard Caughman

LEXINGTON – Ruth W. Caughman, of Lexington, 95, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2013. Born on October 1, 1918 at 403 North Lake Drive in Lexington, she was the daughter of Thomas H. and Amanda Corley Wingard.

She was a graduate of Lexington High School in 1935 and Winthrop College with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1939. She taught at Oak Grove and Lexington Elementary Schools for 37 years before retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church since her marriage to R.H. Caughman in 1940 and taught sunday school, was a member of the Lutheran Church Women and Circle #7. She was a member of the Lexington Literary Club for over 60 years and was instrumental in organizing the Lexington Teen Canteen. She loved her friends and organized many trips and outings with them. She loved traveling and history and spent much time exploring South Carolina, the United States and the world. The family would like to thank Carroll Campbell Place and all the care givers there.

Surviving are her daughter, Charlotte Caughman Compton (Jimmy); daughter-in-law, Virl Swygert Caughman (widow of deceased son, Steve); four grand children, Todd Caughman, Brent Caughman (Amanda), Jason Compton (Tiffany) and Catherine Compton; ten great-grand children, Nikki Espisito (Michael), Jessica Caughman, Hampton Caughman, Hunter Caughman, Caitlin Caughman, Cayden Compton, Sienna Compton, Sydney Compton, Reece Caughman and Hayden Caughman; two great-great grand children, Payton Shelly and Blake Shelly and one sister-in-law, Patty C. Wingard. Mrs. Caughman was preceded in death by her husband R.H. Caughman, son Steve Caughman and brothers, Johnny, Elbert, Walter and Chris Wingard.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Lexington with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors immediately following the graveside service in the church social hall.
