Sylvia Smoak Monson

A funeral service for Sylvia Monson will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (where she was a member), 1130 St. Peters Road, Lexington, SC 29072. The family will receive friends in the church Parish Life Center immediately after the committal.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Commander Jon Philip Monson USN (Ret); her children, Deborah Monson Marcolini (Chris), Jon Philip Monson II (Ellen), Christopher Patrick Monson (Natalie), and Michael Keith Monson; her brother, Robert Leroy Smoak, Jr. (Martha); grandchildren, Haleigh Marcolini Brown (Adam), Christopher Jon Joseph Marcolini, Ashley Lynn Monson, Audrey Lynn Monson (Jewel), Mary Allison Goetz (Chris), Dewey James Flynn (McKenzie), Timothy Daniel Pate; and great grandchildren, Jarod Goetz, Austin Goetz, Tristan Pate, Shelby Goetz, Jacob Russell and Baylor Flynn.

She is predeceased by her father, Robert Leroy Smoak and her mother, Catherine Paulling Smoak.

Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on September 27, 1940, Mrs. Monson loved and was loved by so many people. She treasured her time with her husband, and they had many wonderful travel adventures during his military career and retirement. She was a devoted wife and mother who supported her family in countless ways. Known as “Baba” to her grandchildren, she filled their time together with laughter, love, and fun, creating lasting memories.

Mrs. Monson was an active participant in every community she resided. She served as a Scout Leader, classroom room mother, Sunday school teacher, team mom for many sports, altar guild member, Wildewood Garden Club President, craft group leader and many more. She loved people, surrounded herself with friends and never met a stranger. Her servant’s heart and infectious wit will be missed.
