Darrel Eugene Plummer, age 82, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024. A memorial visitation will be held on October 5, 2024 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Church Archer Pasley Funeral Home, 119 East Franklin Street, Liberty, Missouri 64068.
Darrel was born to A.J. and Mary (Longnecker) Plummer on July 4, 1942 in Greenville, Ohio. He grew up in Ohio, and on June 19, 1962, Darrel married his first wife, Carolyn Davis. At the time, Darrel worked as ramp personnel for TWA in Dayton, Ohio. In 1963, Darrel and Carolyn moved to Inglewood, California so that Darrel could pursue his Airframe and Powerplant License, which would allow him to become an aircraft maintenance technician for TWA. While in Inglewood, Darrel and Carolyn’s first child, Kevin, was born on July 8, 1967. Once Darrel obtained his A&P License, the family returned to Greenville Ohio, where Nevin, the younger of the two brothers, was born on October 9, 1968.
Darrel worked hard supporting the Plummer family farm growing up, later continuing his farmers work ethic for Carolyn‘s father Isaac Newbauer’s dairy farm. They eventually bought their own farm raising feeder hogs, and then moved to a second larger farm expanding their drove to 500 hogs. He took great pride in simultaneously working as a full time farmer and a full time aircraft mechanic and still taking time to play guitar with his buddies and “wrassling” with his boys.
At their second farm, known within the family as ‘the farm back the long lane’, Darrel planned to build a small runway along the side of the long driveway extending from the road back to the house, to indulge another great passion of his, flying small prop airplanes.
Darrel and Carolyn left the farm life behind and moved back to California in 1974, settling in suburban Simi Valley. They eventually divorced in 1980, but love found Darrel again. He met Magaly “Maggie” Padin while working with TWA, and they married in Las Vegas, at the “We’ve Only Just Begun” chapel, on May 4, 1990. Shortly afterwards, they settled in the Kansas City area, where they would remain happily for the rest of their lives. Together they had a beautiful daughter, Justine, born on August 13th, 1993. Sadly, his dearest love Maggie passed away in 2021.
Darrel retired from TWA in 2005, which left him more time for his hobbies and pastimes. He had a motorcycle which he loved to ride, and was well known for going on multi-day bike trips with his friends. He also played guitar, strumming sweet tunes, and learned to do leatherwork, making belts, wrist bands, gun holsters, and similar items, and woodwork building a guitar. He enjoyed shooting, and as a young man enjoyed bow hunting. When he wasn’t out and about, he stayed in and enjoyed video games, especially role-playing games like Skyrim and Final Fantasy.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, A.J. and Mary; his brother, Richard; and his second wife, Maggie. His humor, kind heart, and presence will be missed by all who knew him.
Darrel is survived by his sister, Alcesta (Rodney) Subler; his sons, Kevin Darrel (Paula) and Nevin Duane Plummer; his daughter, Justine Marie (Dalton) Doerr; his nephews Daren (Deana) Subler and Dale (Gunda) Subler; his grandchildren, Lauren Michelle, Aaron Kelly, and Jadon Rey Plummer; and many other friends, family, and loved ones.
