Verna Stroud Patterson passed away peacefully at home on the evening of July 18, 2014, surrounded by many loving family members. She fought a courageous battle with liver and pancreatic cancer for the past several months, maintaining her wonderful sense of humor to the end. It is a blessing that Verna is now pain-free and with her Lord and Savior. Verna’s interests and passions included attending her children’s and grandchildren’s school sporting events, fishing on the pond at her home, and simply enjoying time with her family and friends. Verna was born with an artistic flair – she enjoyed making whimsical craft items using natural materials such as stones, clay and gourds. She was also an avid photographer and birdwatcher. Besides her family, two other loves of her life were her King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, named Duchess and Princess. Verna was born in Gobles, Michigan on December 15, 1939 and spent her childhood at her parent’s home on Brandywine Lake, Michigan. She moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1976 with her husband, Richard F. Stroud II, with whom she was married for 21 years and had four children. After her first husband Richard passed away unexpectedly in 1978, Verna was introduced to a fine man, Wendel Dean Patterson, by the Reverend Harold VanCleave at Park Hill Christian Church in Kansas City. Verna married Wendel on June 11, 1988. Bonded by love and laughter, Verna and Wendel spent 26 happy years together. They enjoyed tending to their beautiful home (“the Farm”) on Skyview Avenue. They also enjoyed traveling to various tropical islands around the world and to Europe. Another joy for Wendel and Verna was traveling to Florida in their motor home. Surviving family members include sister Janice Kinch, sons Richard and Michael Stroud, daughters Beth Stroud and Wendy Lashbrook (Eric) , step-sons Greg (Trisha) and Jeff Patterson (Annette), grandchildren Logan, Jordan and Alexa Lashbrook, Luke and Kate Patterson, Jaqueline and Sean Patterson (Jessica), Sister-in-Law Patricia Meyers, Brother-in-Law Michael Patterson (Anita) and numerous nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her parents LeVerne and Lois Wright, Brother Jack, Sisters–in-Law Betty Stroud and Mary Vinton, Mother-in Law-Ruth Patterson, and Sister- in-Law Bonnie Icenogle (Dwane). In lieu of flowers, Verna’s family recommends contributions may be made to Park Hill Christian Church’s sound system or to NorthCare Hospice. A Celebration of Life for Verna will be held Saturday, July 26 at Park Hill Christian Church, 6601 NW 72nd St, Kansas City MO 64151. Visitation 9:00 am – 11:00 am, followed by Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 am. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at ChurchArcherPasley.com
