There just does not seem to be the right words to express how much Mr. Johnson meant to me and the influence he had on my life.  Math became one of my favorite subjects because of having him as my teacher.  He was also my first basketball coach.  He made things fun in the classroom and on the court and I will be forever grateful that I was lucky to have him in my life. 

My heartfelt sympathies to the Johnson family.

Howard was my brother in law and a great one at that. He taught me how to hunt fish play football and was a great golf partner. He could do anything. He was a great husband to my sister and like a big brother to me in my childhood years. He always had a big smile  for everyone and never met a stranger.  God bless Howard and his family. His passing is a big loss but he left a lot I'm memories cow a lot of folks.

RIP Coach Johnson. The impact you had on so many is amazing. I have reflected on so many good memories and am so thankful to have had the opportunity to know such a great man. You will be missed by many.

A lot of Sunday afternoons were spent driving to Liberty to visit Aunt Irene, Uncle Ick, Howard and Eddie.  I loved those visits.  We'd go down to feed the ponies and play in the barn.  In the summers, I would get to go stay for about a week with them.  I cherished those times.  We would ride Lady and Little Lady and we would go swim in the Johnson farm cow pond, fish, tie tobacco and ride the sled back to the tobacco barn.  We'd walk to the post office for the mail and to the drugstore where Mrs. Crutchfield would make some of the best root beer there ever was.  And then we'd just hang out at the house with Eddie and Howard's friends.  Aunt Irene would always fix us fresh vegetables from the huge garden in back for lunch and I loved it.  But we grew up.  Went separate ways with our new families.  Then along came Facebook and Howard and I reconnected there and through email. He used to send some really, ummm, uh, funny, yeah that's it, funny cartoons.  And I went down to North Myrtle Beach and spent time there a couple of times.  That was where I met Katie, her fiance', and her son.  We've talked each summer about me coming back but we just never got it worked out.  Love you, Howard.  And I wish we had been able to work it out one more time.

My prayers go out to Mr. Johnson's family. He was one of my favorite teachers in school, 5th grade and then 9th grade. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and a beautiful smile. We will  miss you...

 My daughter and son-in-law bought the house beside of Howard (HoJo) a couple years ago.They became good friends with him from the very start. He and Bogie was such a joy to be around, his wonderful smile and laughter will be missed..Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Johnson family, my heart is breaking along with yours. I am so saddened of the passing of Mr. Johnson. He was a wonderful person, a great Raleigh Avenue neighbor, an encourager, a great basketball coach, a mentor, and not to mention my favorite 7th grade teacher. I could go on and on. He always encouraged me to be the best person I could be no matter what, along with his mother, Mrs. Irene Johnson who was my 9th grade teacher. They both played a big part in my life.  He has and always will hold a special place in my heart. Praying for strength.

What will we do without  Howard and Bogie?  His laughter and constant "how you doing?"  And Bogie always by his side.  The beach was always the congregation  hall for Howard and the crew.  We were so blessed to know you and share the same neighborhood at the beach.  You always had a smile for us all or a ride if you needed it. God now has a wonderful man to watch over the golf course in heaven.  Our thoughts and prayers to the family of a very special person.........

Very sorry to hear of Howard's passing. Seems like yesterday that I was sitting in his classroom in 9th grade accelerated algebra. My prayers to his family. May Christ's peace be with you.

What a man he was.  A great loss to his community and children, but I'm pretry sure I can still hear Terry screaming with joy, rushing St. Peter to swing wide the gates!

Taking one of HoJo's classes was a rite of passage at ERHS. No doubt he had heard and seen it all, but still took the time to patiently work with his students when I came through Advanced Math and Calculus. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences to his family - he will be missed.

To the Johnson family-Howard will be missed.  I will always remember playing golf with him and the fun times we had.  We also enjoyed many "arguments" regarding Duke basketball.

To all of Howard's family, Our family's thoughts and prayers be with you during this time. Howard will always be remembered by me as a good friend and classmate for many years, I can remember many good times and his home being like a second home for me growing up while my mother was working and going back to school. Ann, Brud and Katie I'm so sorry about losing your Daddy. I remember hanging with Ann, and playing with your Boxer and watching Terry Ann sew. I haven't seen y'all in such a long time but I  love you and would love to hug your necks.  Please know that I have been praying for you and your Uncle Ed.

To the Johnson family from the Burchette family....we are so sorry for your loss. Our hearts are breaking.  Even though we only knew Howard for a little over 2 years, we loved going to the beach knowing he would be there. Howard was a great friend, neighbor and man.  We are going to miss you!!!

I am so very sorry to read the news of Howard's passing.  I taught for 11 years with HoJo at ERHS and remember many times his stories and jokes bringing the teacher's lounge to life with laughter.  Such a wonderful person and fun-loving character.  My deepest sympathies to his three children.  My heart is with all of you.

I think back to the day we loaded two cars and a u haul and carried retired folks to there dream place. South where waved crashed and Terri was closer to her God and you were in golf course heaven! I think back to lots of family time children becoming adults and especially seeing Katie hod her baby because her Mom was too sick to be there! I shared sadness joy and oh the laughter! I cherished those true friends we count on one hand. I am in disbelief as I was when you called from SC with the horrid news of Terri! I know to plant marigolds to keep the deer away! Oh yea beautiful flower garden but no veggies! Great Danes sharing a bed, sleepless nights of fear for the son well loved. Those golf buddies will hear your laughter in the winds and Ed Todd the fish will never taste the same! From the moment I heard I began the journey of missing some of my past again! May glory and Terris smiling. Face be yours! Don't forget to pet HoJo! We loved you for sure! Family there are no words! Just know you are loved!!!!

Howard coached my 9th grade football team and he really put us through the paces. I think that was his first coaching job and he went on to be one of the best in the area. Great guy, teacher, family man and friend.

I'm sorry for your loss. He was one of the best teachers and coaches I've ever had.

You will be missed. He was a great teacher. I didn't know Howard as a coach, but, made math an easy thing to learn and beating down doors and advocating for me so I could take finals my junior 
year. I did appreciate all that you did.

Dear Old Friend, I miss you more that can be imagined.  I regret that we missed our annual visit in June 2016 but will always remember our last visit in June of 2015 when I was in Liberty, NC.  You were a dear lifelong friend and so enjoyed your lifelong friendship and the times we had years ago in going hunting, fishing, etc.   Your Mother Irene Johnson who was my High School English and French teacher was such a dear person to me and my Mother.  It is still had to accept you are really gone.  Our deepest condolences to your family, children and Eddie Johnson who called to let me know.

Loved, loved, loved Howard Johnson. So many memories from a man who was always a teacher, with a breadth & width of topics too numerous to count. Christmas Eve's morning breakfasts, sausage gravy, rabbit hunting, & oh the story telling followed by that soulful laugh. My deepest condolences to all his loved ones. A great man has passed, & left his mark on me forever.  I will forever be grateful.

My condolences and prayers for the family.  My favorite memory of Mr. Johnson is not all the years learning Math and Physics in his classes at ER, but rather chatting with him on the sidewalk just a few months ago now as an adult and new neighbor.   I had not seen him in 26 years until moving back this way.  Our brief conversation meant a lot more to me than he probably knew.  He was still welcoming and teaching life lessons 26 years later.    I am sure the Lord met him and has welcomed him into his eternal and glorious new neighborhood where his reward and reunion with those gone before has already begun.

We are so sorry to hear about Howard's passing. Howard was our daughter's basketball coach at ERHS and always encouraged her to be her best. Howard was a kind and caring person. He will be missed.
