The spirited soul of Louis Howard Johnson, Jr. embarked on a new adventure August 9, 2016, leaving his family, the entire town of Liberty, NC, and so many more to remember his fond presence in our lives.
Howard, 72, passed suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday morning at his lifelong home in Liberty, NC, Randolph County, where he taught math and physics for 38 years and served as former head football coach and girls' basketball coach at Eastern Randolph High School.
Some of us will remember Howard or "Mr. Johnson" aka “HoJo” as the teacher, the coach or the golfing buddy. Others will remember their gregarious childhood friend. Many of us will remember his unfailing love for his wife, the late Terry Johnson, and their three kids, Ann, Louis ("Brud"), and Katie. Gratefully, those of us who have known and loved him for most of our lives will retain a vision of his disheveled blonde hair and wiry frame against a background of ocean and sand, driving a boat or rough housing on the beach with his kids and grandchildren.
God bless the man who never forgot how to play like a child, despite life's heartbreaks. The sun is forever on his face. God bless also his beloved Terry, who no doubt greets him now with a grin on her face and a punch line in her pocket.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Teresa Ann Sause (Youngstown, OH); son, Louis Howard Johnson III and wife, Elisabeth [Pleasant Garden]; daughter, Mary Catherine Jacobs and husband, James [Liberty]; brother, James Edward Johnson [Liberty]; grandchildren, Tiffany Fogleman Sause, Brittany Sause, Justine Sause, Samantha Sause, Bryan Langley, Cameron Johnson, Roxanne Corfios, and 5 great grandchildren; 1 niece, Jamie Johnson; 2 nephews, Adam and Connor Johnson and countless friends in North Myrtle Beach, Liberty and Randolph County.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 13 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 123 N. Fayetteville Street, Liberty, NC. The family will host a reception of friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home, 212 West Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The "V" (Jimmy Valvano) Foundation for Cancer Research at www.jimmyv.org or 14600 Weston Pkwy, Cary NC. 27513.
