Sophronia "Sophie" York Layton

Sophronia “Sophie” York Layton of Liberty, NC, left her earthly body and entered the gates of heaven on March 26, 2022. Her loving family surrounded her. While we know absence with the body means present with the Lord, and that she is perfectly healed, our hearts are shattered by Sophie’s passing.

Sophie was a devoted friend, daughter, sister, wife, mother, and nana; family came first and was above all else to Sophie. In 1971, she met her husband, Albert “Tommy” Thomas Layton Jr., Sophie, and Tommy were married and had just celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on March 18th.

She worked as a Medical Records Supervisor before she retired due to sickness. She was a member of Richland Church and had to attend virtually the last several years due to her declining health. Her life was a testimony to her faith in God. She gave Him glory for helping her through every journey. She fought hard every day of her life and praised God for the strength to do so. She loved trips to the beach, reading, gardening, drawing, and painting; however, her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Sophie was predeceased by her parents, Giles Lee York and Nettie Mae Johnson York.

She is survived by her husband, Albert “Tommy” Layton Jr., Her daughter Angie Mitchell, grandchildren, Daphne Mitchell, Chloe Mitchell, and Connor Mitchell. She is also survived by her sister, Tanya Layton, and brothers and sisters-in-law: Ricky York (Barbara), Rocky York (Laverne), Roddy York (Wendy), Randy York (Amanda), Ronny York (Lisa), and Rudy York (Mickie), several nieces and nephews, along with all the friends she had made through the years.

A visitation for family and friends will be at Loflin Funeral Home, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue, Liberty, NC, on Thursday, March 31, from 6-8 pm. A private memorial service will be on April 2 for the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sophie’s name to an organization near and dear to her heart, St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
