On March 27, 2024, the world lost a remarkable soul, Helen Ozanian, at the age of 93. Born on a sunny day in 1930 in Cairo, Helen’s life was a testament to the strength, love, and resilience that defined her. With her Armenian heritage as a rich tapestry in the background, Helen navigated the challenges of early life with grace, her spirit undimmed by adversity.
Educated in a boarding school that shaped her into a sister, protector, and guardian for her younger siblings, Helen emerged with an indomitable spirit. Her journey led her to the vibrant streets of New York City, where her talent and passion for hairdressing allowed her to touch the lives of many, including notable figures like Ethyl Merman and Peggy Cass. It was in this bustling metropolis that she met Karnig Ozanian, the love of her life. Their union was blessed with 65 years of shared dreams, three sons, and the bittersweetness of both joy and sorrow.
Together, they navigated the heartache of losing their son Ronnie to leukemia at the tender age of 12, a loss that would forever mark their hearts. Yet, their love and resilience saw them through, creating a legacy of strength and compassion that would define their family. Helen and Karnig’s partnership endured until Karnig’s passing in 2016 at the age of 94, a testament to their undying love and commitment to one another.
Helen’s life was a canvas of rich experiences, from her early days in Cairo to her transformative years in New York and beyond. As dementia clouded her vibrant memories, the importance of each moment spent with her became even more profound, reminding us of the fragility and beauty of life.
Helen’s legacy is carried on by her sons, Richard and Christopher, and her beloved grandchildren, Kristin and Greg, embodying the love and lessons she imparted, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness, warmth, and indomitable spirit.
