Laura Amaral dos Santos

On Monday, November 28, 2022, Laura Amaral dos Santos went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Our dear and beloved Laura was born in Varre-Sai, Rio de Janeiro on June 28, 1926, into a Christian family. She lived with her family in Rio de Janeiro, where she grew up amongst her siblings, Antônio, Alfredo, and Silvia.

At the age of 18, she started to study the become a missionary, but after completing her studies, she decided to become a nurse. With great effort, she managed to pass and enter the Federal University Fluminense, attending the Anna Nery School of Nursing. She graduated in 1957 and went to work in the Air Force, where, as a nurse, she achieved a new challenge for women at the time. After much dedication, she reached a milestone in her life when she became Head Nurse.

In 1957, the same year of her graduation, she met Otávio Mendes dos Santos, a medical student, at the Presbyterian Cathedral in Rio de Janeiro. After a year, they married, becoming partners for the rest of their lives. From this union they had four children, Gláucia, Cátia, Byron, and Junior, to whom she dedicated herself with much love and pride, being an excellent mother to all, without distinction.

Laura and Dr. Otávio worked together, always in the Church, with medical care and preaching the word of the Lord. In the city of Bananal (São Paulo), once or twice a month they did social work, assisting people in need medical assistance, and this work was also done weekly at the church’s headquarters.

After she retired from her dedicated Air Force career in 1977, Laura and Dr. Otávio started taking care of elderly people at the Trindade Geriatric Clinic in Guadalupe, Rio de Janeiro.

Her beloved husband, a doctor, and elder at the Presbyterian Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Otávio passed away in 1994 in Bananal (São Paulo), where for decades, along with his wife, he faithfully served the Lord and provided medical assistance to those in need.

Laura went on to dedicate herself to the grandchildren God had given her. She was always very caring, generous, and ready to serve. She had a great sense of humor, was good-natured, and loved to joke with her grandchildren, and a sincerity that was peculiar to her.

During much of her life, she divided her time between Brazil and the United States. In Brazil, she gave special attention to her children Byron and Junior, granddaughters Juliana and Valeska, daughter-in-law Deborah, sister Silvia, brother Antônio, nephews, and nieces. In the United States, the attention was her daughters Gláucia and Cátia, and her grandchildren, Camilla, Laura, Lucas, Josef, and Gabriela.

In 2014, at the age of 89, after the sudden and premature death of her son Byron, she no longer returned to Brazil. Although she loved her country very much, she preferred to avoid the pain of remembering her beloved son. Her family visited her whenever they could and these were always moments of great joy for her. Even those who could not visit her in the United States were always in touch. She always sought to preserve family unity, which was very important to her.

She had a strong personality and impressive insight and wisdom. We all have many funny and wise stories of our dear Mother in our memory. We admired her very much!

Laura was a woman of prayer and unshakable faith. God was always her refuge and strength. She was always ready to pray for anyone in need. She surrendered to the love of Jesus, asked for forgiveness, and knew how to forgive.

Her broad smile and clear transparent eyes radiated the presence of the Holy Spirit everywhere, warming the hearts of those who were by her side.

She had an impressive intelligence and memory, which were her companions until her last days.

Even with all the frailties of an advanced age, she wanted to continue to be useful. She couldn’t stand still. Work was her middle name. Either crocheting, sewing, or cooking, she always tried to be active and helpful. She was always attentive to everyone’s needs, concerned with helping and serving. Helping in what she could and in what she couldn’t!

In the last three months of her life, because of several falls, her arm was immobilized, making her very sad.

In Proverbs 31:10, "Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.” 31:28 “Her children arise and call her blessed”; Yes, this is what we feel and live, we call her blessed.

She lived a long and full life on earth, in God's presence and full of love. Laura was without a doubt a faithful servant of the Lord!

She received the care, affection, and love of her children and grandchildren until the last days of her life.

We are extremely grateful to our Lord for having the honor and privilege of being her children.

She cared a lot for her family and for the Kingdom of God, and since she was young she had a great evangelistic ardor. We can truly affirm by the testimony of her life that God is faithful and true.

In Psalm 37:25, “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken.” She was never forsaken! God is faithful in all His promises!

“I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me, even if he dies, he will live.” John 11:25

After an intense life of work, dedication and always in the service of the Lord, she now rests by His side fully restored, with the reward of an eternity of joy with God! In the presence of our Most High God, we will find her to live in eternity. Amen!

Our dear Laura leaves her children, Gláucia, Cátia, and Júnior, her son-in-law Ewald, her daughter-in-law, Débora; nine grandchildren, Josef, Gabriela, Julie, Elena, Camilla, Laura, Lucas, Juliana, and Valeska; three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Edie, and Amelia Laura; and beyond family members and thousands of people who loved her.

A memorial service will be held at the home of her daughter, Glaucia and Ewald Horwath, 8234 Stagecoach Lane, Boca Raton, FL, at 2:30pm on December 18, 2022, for family and close friends. Additional memorial services are being planned on December 29th, at 10:00 am at Holy Rood Cemetery in NJ

Foi no dia 28 de novembro de 2022, uma segunda feira, que Laura Amaral dos Santos foi ao encontro de Jesus, na glória.

Nossa querida e amada Laura nasceu em Varre-Sai, no dia 28 de Junho de 1926 em uma família cristã. Foi com sua família para a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, onde cresceu com seus irmãos, Antônio, Alfredo e Silvia.

Iniciou seus estudos para ser missionária aos 18 anos e após terminá-lo, decidiu ser enfermeira. Com grande esforço e determinação conseguiu ser aprovada e ingressar na Universidade Federal Fluminense, cursando na Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery. Graduou em 1957 e foi trabalhar na Aeronáutica, onde, como enfermeira, alcançou um novo desafio para mulheres da época. Após muita dedicação em seu trabalho atingiu um novo marco em sua vida ao se tornar enfermeira chefe.

No mesmo ano de sua graduação em 1957 conheceu Otávio Mendes dos Santos, estudante de medicina, na Catedral Presbiteriana do Rio de Janeiro. Após um ano se casaram, tornando-se companheiros pelo resto da vida. Dessa união, tiveram quatro filhos, Gláucia, Cátia, Byron e Junior, aos quais se dedicava com muito amor e orgulho, sendo ótima mãe para todos, sem distinção.

Trabalharam juntos, sempre na Igreja, com atendimento médico e na pregação da palavra do Senhor. Na cidade de Bananal (SP), uma vez por mês realizavam trabalho social atendendo pessoas carentes de assistência médica, sendo esse trabalho também realizado semanalmente na sede da igreja.

Ao se aposentar na Aeronáutica em 1977, após muito trabalho e dedicação de uma vida, junto com seu marido, passaram a cuidar de idosos, na Clínica Geriátrica Trindade em Guadalupe, no Rio de Janeiro.

Seu amado marido, Médico e Presbítero na Catedral Presbiteriana do Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Otávio faleceu em 1994 em Bananal (SP), local que durante décadas, ao lado de sua mulher, serviu fielmente ao Senhor e prestando serviço de assistência médica aos mais necessitados.

Laura passou a dedicar-se aos netos que Deus lhe proporcionou. Sempre foi muito cuidadosa, generosa e pronta para servir. Tinha ótimo senso de humor, disposição para os netos sempre pronta para as brincadeiras e uma sinceridade que lhe era peculiar.

Durante uma grande parte de sua vida, dividiu seu tempo entre o Brasil e Estados Unidos. No Brasil, dava especial atenção a seus filhos Byron e Junior, netas Juliana e Valeska, nora Débora, irmã Silvia, Irmão Antônio, sobrinhos e sobrinhas.  Nos Estados Unidos, a atenção era com suas filhas Gláucia e Cátia, seus netos, Camilla, Laura, Lucas, Josef e Gabriela.

Em 2014, aos 89 anos, após o falecimento súbito e prematuro de seu filho Byron, não retornou mais ao Brasil. Apesar de amar muito seu país, preferiu evitar a dor da lembrança de seu amado filho. Seus familiares passaram a visitá-la sempre que podiam e eram sempre momentos de grande alegria para ela. Mesmo os que não podiam visitá-la nos Estados Unidos estavam sempre em contato. A união da família sempre foi uma marca na sua vida, da qual ela sempre preservou.

Tinha uma personalidade forte, dona de uma perspicácia e sabedoria impressionante. Certamente todos nós temos mais de uma história engraçada e sábia de nossa querida Mãe em nossa memória.  Nós a admirávamos muito!

Laura era uma mulher de oração e fé inabalável. Deus sempre foi seu refúgio e fortaleza. Estava sempre pronta para orar por qualquer pessoa que necessitasse. Se rendia ao amor de Jesus, pedia perdão e sabia perdoar.

Seu sorriso largo, olhar claro e transparente, irradiavam a presença do Espírito Santo em todos os lugares, aquecendo os corações de quem estava ao seu lado.

Tinha uma inteligência e memória impressionante, que lhe foram companheiras até seus últimos dias.

Mesmo com todas as fragilidades de uma idade avançada, queria continuar a ser útil, não conseguia ficar parada. Trabalho era seu sobrenome. Ou no crochê, ou na costura, ou na cozinha, sempre procurava estar ativa e ser prestativa. Estava sempre atenta a necessidade de todos se preocupando em ajudar e servir. Ajudando no que podia e no que não podia!

Nos últimos três meses de sua vida, por conta de várias quedas, ficou com o braço imobilizado, sem possibilidade de locomover-se, deixando-a muito triste.

Em Provérbios 31:10, “Mulher virtuosa, quem a achará? O seu valor muito excede o de  finas jóias” No versículo 28: “Levantam-se seus filhos, e lhe chamam bem-aventurada”. Sim isto é o sentimos e vivemos, chamando-a bem-aventurada.

Viveu uma vida longa e plena na Terra, na presença de Deus e cheia de amor. Foi sem dúvida uma serva fiel do senhor!

Recebeu o zelo, carinho e amor de seus filhos e netos até os últimos dias de sua vida. Somos extremamente gratos ao Nosso Senhor por ter o privilégio e a honra de sermos filhos dela.

Zelava muito pela família e pelo Reino de Deus, desde jovem tinha um ardor evangelístico muito grande. Podemos realmente afirmar pelo testemunho de sua vida que Deus é fiel e verdadeiro.

No Salmo 37:25, “Já fui jovem e agora sou velho, mas nunca vi o justo desamparado”. Ela nunca foi desamparada! Deus é fiel em todas as suas promessas!

“Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida, quem crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá". João 11:25.

Após uma vida intensa de trabalho, dedicação e sempre a serviço do Senhor, agora descansa ao seu lado totalmente restaurada, com a recompensa de uma eternidade de alegria junto de Deus! Na presença do nosso Deus Altíssimo, iremos encontrá-la para vivermos na eternidade. Amém!

Nossa querida Laura deixa seus filhos, Gláucia, Cátia e Júnior, seu genro Ewald, sua nora, Débora; nove netos, Josef, Gabriela, Julie, Elena; Camilla, Laura, Lucas; Juliana e Valeska; três bisnetos; Aidan, Edie e Amélia Laura e além de familiares e milhares de pessoas que a amavam.
