William Rush Cary, age 73, went to heaven on Saturday, September 30, 2023. During his 22-year battle with cancer, Bill fought hard for his loved ones and eventually passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters.
Bill was born in Clifton Forge, Virginia, on December 29, 1949, to Albert and Martha Cary. He spent most of his childhood in West Virginia, although his family moved every two to three years because Bill’s father worked for the railroad.
Bill graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Even though he moved to Florida shortly after graduation, he was always a die-hard Mountaineer fan. Bill met the love of his life, Anne Sydnor, in Fort Lauderdale. She just so happened to be a West Virginia girl herself, which made their incredible bond even stronger. Bill and Anne were blessed with two girls, Andrea and Katie.
Bill was a passionate Christian, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was highly respected in his career and always put others before himself. He will long be remembered for his infectious laugh, kind spirit, and keen sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his wife, Anne, to whom he was married for over 45 beautiful years; his daughters and sons-in law Katie and Edward McLean and Andrea and Bob Dechert. His true joy came from his five wonderful grandchildren: Lacy (13), Landon (10), Gavin (10), Jackson (8) and Sophie (4). Bill was also close to his brother, Bray Cary, and his sister, Alice Cary, and his nephew, two nieces, and many cousins.
One of Bill’s favorite songs includes the lyrics “Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain momma, take me home, country roads.” Bill’s family is thankful that he is in his heavenly home, the place he belongs—and remains comforted by the fact that he had many special friends and family waiting for him at heaven’s gate.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Christ Church United Methodist at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 5. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family requests donations in his memory be made to the Oakland Park Kiwanis Club: P.O. Box 24931 Oakland Park, Florida 33307.
