He was born in Tucson, Arizona on August 5, 1947, to Vesta Mae and Daniel Edward Johnson, Jr. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1969, and attended the University’s graduate school from 1969 to1970.
In the summer of 1966, he became a third generation railroader, hiring out as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad and joining the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT), thus beginning a lifetime dedication to railroad employees.
In August 2007, after 41 years of railroad and union service, he retired as International General Secretary and Treasurer for the United Transportation Union, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dan was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a cancer that causes abnormal plasma cells to accumulate in the bone marrow) in 1998. Doctors gave him three months to live; Dan, however, chose to fight. In1999, he underwent a nine-month stem cell transplant, including nine full-body treatments of irradiation; he was still in remission when he died. After overcoming battles with alcohol (23 years of sobriety), tobacco (17 years), in 2013, he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Dan is survived by his wife Jan, her children—who he loved as if they were his own—Suzanne Kelez Soshea (Steven), Nicholas Kelez (Kim), and grandchildren Cole and Cassandra Kelez; his sister Patricia Slade (Jim) and their children, Sara Nuccio (Ron), Holly Butler (Jeremy), James Slade (Jillian), eight grand nephews and nieces; as well as cousins Ken and Gary Miller.
There will be a private Masonic Service and “Celebration of Life” honoring Dan in August.
