John Oldemeyer, 81, passed away on Monday, August 7th, 2023 at his home in Lincoln, CA surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born on July 2, 1942 to the late Virgil and Marian Oldemeyer of Los Altos, CA. He graduated from Los Altos High School in 1960 and later attended Chico State University where he was a member of the Delta Psi Delta fraternity. John excelled outside the classroom as well being named captain of the Chico State tennis team and helping get soccer established as a competitive team sport. John graduated from CSU in 1965 maintaining long-term friendships with many fellow alumni and was subsequently inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2018.
John and his late wife, Karen, were married for 42 years with much of that time residing in Pleasanton, CA and later as part of the Sun City community of Lincoln, CA. His early career started as a high school guidance counselor but spent the next 40+ years as a partner with Onstad’s Insurance Agency. He enjoyed golfing, duck hunting, reading and entertaining others with a glass of wine and one of his many stories.
Surviving are his two sons, Mark (Leslie) Oldemeyer of Granite Bay, CA and Scott Oldemeyer of Oakley, CA as well as his two brothers, Robert Oldemeyer of Arroyo Grande, CA and Ron (Janet) Oldemeyer of Grandview, WA and his longtime companion, Mary Traynham of Arbuckle, CA. He will forever be in the hearts of his five grandchildren, Kaila, Avery, Logan, Grant, and Blake and his great grandchild, Oliver.
Services will be held Saturday, September 9th at 10:00 A.M. at Lincoln Hills Community Church in Lincoln, CA with gathering to follow at Orchard Creek Lodge. Memorial contributions can be made to The John & Karen Oldemeyer Memorial Scholarship, which has been established in support of the men’s soccer program at Chico State University.
