Maria C. Delgado, 89, passed away peacefully at the family home in Lincoln, Friday, February 11, 2022, with her son Johnny, grandson Andrew, daughter-in-law Dana and granddaughter-in-law Stephanie by her side. Maria was the loving wife of the late Johnny C. Amongol.
Maria was born in San Juan opico, In the Departmento de Libertad, El Salvador on April 5, 1932, the daughter of the late Carlos Arana and Bersabe Delgado. She immigrated to the United States in the mid 1950s and settled in Redwood City , California.
Family mattered most to Maria. No matter where she was or what she was doing, she always gave her full attention to a family member in need. She was a great listener, confidant, friend and the matriarch of our family. The life lessons and love she gave will live on in her family and enrich generations to come. Maria was an incredible mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and Godmother. Maria always said, “I have two boys and I love them both the same.”
Even as her illness progressed, Maria continued to inquire daily about the lives of all of her family. She was always delighted when family called or came to see her. She was kind to everyone she met and made friends easily with her infectious smile, wicked sense of humor, and her genuine interest in who she was meeting. She led an active life, always going, always busy. She was passionate about outdoor activities such as walking alone or with her family and animal companions, attending baseball games, and musical concerts. Her favorite places to walk were in the countryside or along the Pacific Coast. She enjoyed travelling to various parts of Central America, Hawaii, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Canada. She enjoyed activities such as horseback riding (first time on a horse age 72), swimming, yoga, belly dancing, horse racing, and whale watching. Music filled our home. She loved Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and Patsy Cline best. She was an avid San Francisco Giants fan and attended many games at Candlestick Park and Pac Bell Park. One of her most treasured memories was attending the 2010 World Series Giants parade. She was a fan of the Sacramento River Cats and the Lincoln Potters. Her favorite baseball event was the dancing dinosaur. She would watch her beloved Giants on television or listen to games on the radio if she could not attend a game in person.
One of Maria’s proudest moments was becoming a United States citizen. She did not have a formal education. She enrolled in night school to master the English language. In four months, she learned to proficiently read, write and speak English. In her late forties, Maria returned to school to complete a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant she was extremely proud of this accomplishment. For more than 20 years she provided loving care to those in need.
