Alan Ray (Hafermann) Metzger was born in Auburn, Nebraska, on March 14, 1946. His parents were Ted and Margaret (Klepper Hafermann) Metzger. He had an older brother, Herman Lee, and younger sister, Joyce.
Alan’s father died when Alan was 11 years old. A few years later, his mother and the three children moved to Lincoln. He joined the U.S. Army in 1964 and served in Germany until his tour was over in 1967. Alan had an interest in automobiles at an early age and bought and sold dozens of cars while in his 20’s. Alan worked at Goodyear, various printing companies and for the Lincoln Public Schools. He was a member of Indian Hills Community Church, the Nifty Fifties Ford Club, and the American Legion.
He married Janice (Sturm) Averill on August 14, 1982 and became stepfather to David Averill.
Alan loved God, Jan and David, his family and friends, and his 1956 Ford. He never knew a stranger, was a jokester, was a humble man, and was a wonderful husband to Jan. He and Jan took many road trips in Nebraska and to car events in several different states in their 1956 Ford with friends who shared the same interests. He will be missed by many.
Alan departed this world with Jan at his side on June 18. He is now free of his illness and pain and is with his heavenly father.
Alan is survived by his wife, Janice; bonus son, David Averill; Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law, Sang and Joyce Lee, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by parents, brother and sister.
Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 22 at 2:00pm at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, 6800 S. 14th Street, enter Gate 3. The family requests no flowers.
