

David was the eldest of eight brothers and sisters. He experienced the hardships of the farm and the Great Depression. He was drafted into WWII at the end of his senior year in high school in 1944. He reached the rank of Electrician Petty Officer, 2nd Class, in the Navy, working on an LST ship in the Pacific and China Theaters. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Darnold, whom he met at the ice cream shop in Wymore. He started his working career on the docks packing chickens for Swift & Co. in Beatrice, then became a salesman in Omaha, working his way up to General Manager of the Swift Edible Oils division in Ft. Worth, TX. He was a member of the American Legion and a Mason 32nd Degree. After 34 years he retired from Swift and became the President of Western Commercial Transport Company. He retired in 1989 to the Glen Garden Country Club and played golf until age 93.
David was a member of Meadowbrook Poly United Methodist church for over 50 years and was active in Road Runner class. He loved to travel and volunteered for many positions. David loved getting to know his neighbors and was active in the neighborhood association. He had a love of cars and motorcycles, and could fix almost anything and knew almost everything. He was well read and kept learning new things such as texting on his iPhone. He was devoted to his two daughters Gail and LisaRae, and missed his wife Betty who preceded him in death in 2013. He had a strong will to live and gave his family so much love and support. His grandchildren will miss their visits with him, and his worldly advice.
David leaves behind his daughters, Gail Bell and LisaRae Turnbull; his sister, Carolyn White; brother, Paul Turnbull; grandchildren, Clint Bell, Tracey Lagomasino-Bell, Carlos Oliva and Diego Oliva; five wonderful great-grandchildren; one new great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen Turnbull; spouse, Betty; sisters, Colleen Coffey, Jan Brantingham, Donna Kipf, Margaret Moser; and brother, Jim Turnbull.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 15, 1:00 p.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home, 3344 White Settlement Rd., Fort Worth, TX, with visitation following from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. On April 26, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., a service and burial will be held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St., Lincoln, NE.
