She was born on July 24, 1944 in Kearney, NE and grew up in Lincoln with her parents Barbara (Oertwig) and Joseph Geist. She was the eldest of three girls, the late Karen (Geist) Wolfe and Patti (Geist) Edwards. She spent her adolescent summers at the Oertwig Farm in Amherst learning new recipes from her Grandma Nora and tinkering around the barn. One could always find Georgia reading a trait that lasted most of her life. Some fond family memories included trips down to Arkansas. Our Georgia girl took her mother’s lead in musical talent and taught piano for many years. She was active in Lincoln Northeast Theatre and participated in music and many Rocket Revues. She graduated with the class of 1962 and she felt a strong pull to explore the west coast. She graduated from the Hancock School of Theatre in Santa Maria, CA after several successful performances. She was an accomplished seamstress and stage manager. She spent the better part of 30 years between California, Oregon, and Washington making friends and relishing life. In 1984, while living in Washington, she was blessed with a daughter, Amanda. She and Amanda moved back to Lincoln and built a beautiful life.
She soon began work at Geist Manufacturing as a Customer Service Rep and later an OSHA Safety Coordinator. She really enjoyed working with her family and took any class available from computer programming to shorthand to ensure she was always ready to help.
As her daughter grew, they enjoyed going to the Farmer’s Market, antiquing, Lied Center performances, or staying home to watch movies or puttering in their craft room. Georgia was known for her VHS and later DVD collection. Some of her favorites were Monty Python and anything by Mel Brooks.
Georgia’s creative vision and talents were such gifts. She could make something out of nothing or whip up delicious dishes without a recipe. Her empathetic heart guided her to help those around her at any time. Her selflessness, giving heart, and dynamite personality were her strongest traits.
Once Amanda was in college, she took the Secretary and Christian Ed Director position at their home church, Northeast United Church of Christ. She took pride in building a strong Youth Program and inspiring stewardship within the church. There were many clever melodramas directed by Georgia and Christmas craft camps for the kids of the church.
She also had an innate talent of soothing and calming those who needed a shoulder, hug, or kiss on the cheek. She gave affection freely and made sure everyone felt welcome. Her warmth will me missed greatly.
She is survived by her father, Joseph Geist of Lincoln; sister, Patti (Geist) and Marty Edwards of Kansas City, MO; niece, Tania (Madison) and Doug Kruce of Lincoln; daughter, Amanda (Williams) and Jim Remmenga of Holdrege, NE; grandchildren, Robert and Cecily Remmenga; nephew Matt and Courtney Edwards, nephew Craig and Katie Edwards, nephew and nieces Noah, Jordan, and Eden Kruce; dear friends, Pat and Megan Young, Vyrla Jackson, and countless other friends who were as close as family.
Her family is confident that she is relishing the freedom of her heavenly surroundings with her mother, Barbara, sister, Karen, and many friends and family who preceded her in death.
We all mourn this beautiful daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. Her goodness and gentle spirit will forever be in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
We love you.
One of our favorite Georgia quotes is: “Remember, I don’t keep any bail money, so be good!”
