James Donovan "Don" Cooper, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on December 14, 1932, to Heiko and Adah Cooper. Don lived a life rooted in faith, family, hard work, and kindness.
Don attended Adams School and graduated in 1950. On February 15, 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served for two years in Germany as a clerical soldier. After returning home, he purchased his first tractor and began building the life he loved most--farming and raising a family.
In the summer of 1955, Don met the love of his life, Delores, at Hallam picnic. They were united in marriage on December 23, 1956, and shared nearly 70 wonderful years together. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Robin, Steve and wife Teresa, and Bev and husband Leo. Over the years, their family grew to include seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought Don endless pride and joy.
Don farmed for many years before beginning a second career with Norris Public Schools in 1982. For 20 years, he faithfully served as a custodian and groundskeeper, becoming a familiar and friendly presence to students and staff alike before retiring in 2002.
Retirement gave Don more time to enjoy the simple things he loved most--tending his garden, working in his woodshop, feeding the birds, and cheering on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all of their activities and accomplishments.
Don will be remember for his strong work ethic, quit kindness, steady presences, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives in the the many lives he touched and in the family he cherished so deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Heiko and Adah Cooper, his sisters, Juniece Willeford and Marilyn TenHulzen, and son-in-law Forrest DeVries.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Delores; his children Robin, Steve and Teresa, and Bev and Leo; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
We will be gathering to celebrate his wonderful life on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 6-9pm at Hickman Community Center.
Memorials will be donated to the Norris Softball Fountain
