

Joan Louise Baker, 84, died Thursday July 30th after a very brief illness. Born July 10, 1931 to Floyd and Eleanor Baker (Lawlor) in Lincoln. March 10, 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, John “Emmett” Baker and didn’t have to change her name. She became a licensed Cosmetologist in 1950 and worked as a hairdresser at Gold’s Department Store (Brandeis). They had four children and she chose to have her beauty shops in her homes. She also shared a passion for bowling and pool and participated in multiple leagues. Joan was a charter member of Capital City Christian Church. She will be remembered as juggling a busy beauty shop, a household, 4 active children, several pets and still always having supper on the table. Joan is preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years (March 2015) her parents and brothers Harlan (Duke), Orvin and Paul Baker (April 2015). She is survived by daughters Marcia Malone (Steve) of Martell, NE, Marissa Paltz (Sam) of Beaumont, TX; sons, Emmett L. Baker (fiancée Kristin) and John C. Baker, of Lincoln. Joan has 6 grandchildren, Matthew (Amy) Malone, Andrew (Nikki) Malone of Lincoln, Cristina (Ross) Wilkinson and Ashley (Tony) Tortorice, Jr. all of Houston TX, and Emmett, Jr. and Lucas Baker of Lincoln. She has 13 great-grandchildren, Kelsey Lynch, Moira Kleinschmit , Abbie and Ethan Malone, Mallory and Xavier Malone, Salvadore and Frances Tortorice, Jack Baker and Lyla Wilkinson. Memorial Service Thursday, August 6th at 11:00, Capital City Christian Church, 7800 Holdrege, Lincoln, NE.
